Kano State Police Command has confirmed that the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) for Gwale Constituency, Aminu Abdullahi Warkal, is in its custody over an alleged unlawful display and firing of a firearm during a political rally.
The command also said the investigation into the incident was ongoing.
The police spokesperson, Abdullahi Kiyawa, disclosed this in a response to an inquiry yesterday, following the command’s invitation of the politician over a viral video allegedly showing him firing a firearm during a political rally in Unguwar Jan Bulo, Kano.
“He is in custody. Investigation is ongoing, please,” Kiyawa said.
The command had said on Monday that Warkal was invited after its routine cyber patrol uncovered a video clip allegedly showing him openly displaying a firearm suspected to be a pump-action rifle at the gathering.
The commissioner of police, Ibrahim Bakori, was said to have directed the invitation after the video surfaced on social media.
Earlier reports indicated that Warkal allegedly fired the weapon three times into the air shortly after arriving at a gathering organised to receive campaign materials donated in support of the NDC candidate for Gwale Federal Constituency, Muhammad Hamisu UK.
The police had said the alleged unlawful display of the firearm, if established, could constitute a violation of the Firearms Act and pose a threat to public peace.
