Energy Expert Urges Extension of Fuel Tax Waiver Amid Rising Oil Prices

By Honester Mshoka Energy Expert JOHNSTONE CHIKWANDA has appealed to Government to consider extending the waiver on exercise duty and zero-rated VAT on petroleum products for a further three months. Dr. CHIKWANDA says the call is anchored on tensions in the Middle East, which have pushed crude oil prices to 100 dollars per barrel. He told ZNBC News in an interview that the conflict is concerning, as it could undermine the recent prospects of a reduction in fuel prices. Dr. CHIKWANDA said the situation is likely to affect fuel pump prices not only in Zambia, but across the African region. He explained that prevailing market conditions remain unfavorable, adding that failure to extend the waiver could result in pump prices increasing by more than 20 percent. The waiver which was implemented to cushion fuel prices in view of the Iran is due to expire on September 30,2026.
