Training courses equip Walvis Bay residents with skills

WALVIS BAY – Sixty unemployed residents of Walvis Bay are getting free training in hospitality and tourism, as well as computer and office administration, to improve their chances of finding jobs or starting their own businesses.

The training, organised by the Walvis Bay Urban constituency office in collaboration with Women’s Action for Development (WAD), started on 21 September and runs until October 2026.

There are 30 participants in each course. Hannah Kwanyenga, who attended the hospitality and tourism course, said participants had learnt practical skills such as cooking, making beds and looking after guests.

“I am grateful to the government and the councillors for giving us this opportunity, where we gained experience. We are looking forward to starting our own businesses,” she said.

The course aims to help unemployed young people gain skills that could open doors to jobs in hotels, guesthouses and other businesses in Walvis Bay’s hospitality and tourism industry.

It could also help those who want to start small businesses in the sector. Meanwhile, participants in the computer and office administration course are learning basic computer skills, including typing, word processing and using a mouse.

Ndilimeke Haipingi said the training had given participants a chance to learn skills they could use when applying for jobs or working in an office.

“We are really grateful for this opportunity because it will help us in the future,” she said. Another participant said the course had introduced them to basic computer operations, including typing and using a mouse. Participants described the free training as a great opportunity, especially considering that they did not have to pay for the course.

“It was such a great opportunity because it’s a free course. We cannot pay anything, but hopefully, if more courses like this are offered, it will really help the Walvis Bay community.”

According to Charles Neidel, the Walvis Bay Urban constituency officer is working with WAD and its coordinator, Asia Aisia, to provide unemployed residents with practical skills.

The computer and office administration course covers document preparation, filing, communication, data capturing and general office procedures.

Neidel said the skills could help participants perform administrative tasks in offices, businesses and community organisations.

The two courses aim to give unemployed residents a better chance of finding work while encouraging them to use their skills to earn income.
