Bimal Rathnayake Congratulates Lula da Silva on Brazil Election Victory
The following is a post shared by Minister Bimal Rathnayake on his Facebook page regarding Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s victory in Brazil’s presidential election.
“The people have elected Workers’ Party candidate Lula da Silva as the winner of Brazil’s presidential race!
I followed this election campaign for several reasons, one of which was the significant impact its outcome would have on the world. Today, the result has turned out to be a people-oriented one.
This election result has proved to the world the strength people possess to fight against money, media machinery, algorithms, racism and evil ideologies!
Lula began his life as a worker. At the age of 17, while working in a shoe factory as a teenager, he lost one of his fingers in an accident. As a result, Lula has only nine fingers on his hands.
During this election campaign, one of the main tactics used by the far-right candidate and his supporters to attack Lula was to repeatedly highlight the fact that he has only nine fingers.
Even during the final televised debate of Brazil’s presidential election, the far-right candidate said, ‘Lula has nine, I have ten, and I will win!’
It reminded me of the insults directed at Comrade Anura in the same manner during our presidential election two years ago, as well as the insults that continue to be hurled at him today!
Lula is a man from humble beginnings!
But the people of Brazil have shown that they are as big as Brazil itself!
Keep going! Let us become even more people-oriented!!
