The flamboyant Zimbabwean businessman and his wife, Lucy “Lulu” Muteke, died in a helicopter crash in their home country on Wednesday, 30 September.

Wicknell was known for his lucrative business interests and contracts in energy, infrastructure and public-sector projects as well as his close ties with African presidents and leaders. He maintained that all his business dealings were above board.

According to reports, Lucy and Wicknell Chivayo were two of six fatalities of a helicopter crash on the Kudenga Farm, southeast of Harare.

The helicopter crashed approximately 40 minutes after take-off and caught fire.

Family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo confirmed the deaths of the 43-year-old businessman and his spouse to state broadcaster ZBC.

“We are at a loss for words after the tragic news,” the family spokesperson told the ZBC.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.

In June, Wicknell Chivayo shared the news of his luxury property purchase. The Clifton cove is located on Top Road in Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard.

Wicknell revealed that he had purchased the four-bedroom mansion for its R110 million asking price. He then proceeded to furnish the home with R50 million worth of luxury fittings like imported marble counters and floors, and teakwood furniture.

He shared on Facebook: “A cool 160 MILLION RAND in total WELL SPENT, including everything done and delivered with utmost CLASS and attention to detail……GOD IS THE GREATEST…”

The home was designed by the SAOTA architecture firm, and features views of Lion’s Head, Signal Hill, Table Bay, and Robben Island.

It boasts an elevator, gym, home theatre, wine cellar, scuallery, and private deck.
