Kenya’s Second Ebola Patient Was Already in Quarantine, Ministry Says
The Ministry of Health has confirmed a second case of the Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease in Kenya, noting that health teams detected the infection while the patient was already undergoing mandatory daily monitoring in quarantine.
The patient, a 39-year-old male and close relative of Kenya’s index Ebola patient, developed a high fever, fatigue, and joint pains on October 13. Quarantine teams immediately isolated him and collected diagnostic samples, which returned matching positive results for the Bundibugyo strain at both the National Virology Reference Laboratory and the KEMRI-CDC laboratory.
Health workers have since transferred the patient to a designated regional isolation center to receive specialized supportive care.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, October 14, health officials attributed the prompt diagnosis to rigorous daily surveillance, bringing Kenya’s cumulative tallies to two confirmed cases and one death.
“The Ministry of Health confirms a second case of Ebola (Bundibugyo Virus Disease) in Kenya. The patient, a 39-year-old man, is a close family member of the first case and was already in quarantine, under daily monitoring, when he fell ill on 13th October 2026. Kenya has now recorded two confirmed cases and one death,” read the MOH statement in part.
Contact Tracing and Strict Isolation Measures
Epidemiological investigations confirm a direct link between the two cases, with public health teams finding no evidence of general community transmission.
Contact tracing teams following the initial infection identified 128 potential contacts. By October 13, surveillance officers successfully located 113 individuals, placing 108 into a 21-day facility quarantine involving twice-daily clinical reviews and temperature screenings. International authorities received notifications under International Health
Regulations regarding five contacts who departed the country, while active tracing efforts continue for the remaining 15 individuals.
Following the secondary confirmation, epidemiologists have expanded contact tracing to map individuals exposed to the second patient after his symptom onset, focusing primarily on quarantine staff and attending healthcare workers.
To contain potential exposure, health authorities have enforced heightened infection prevention and control measures across all active treatment centers and quarantine sites.
National Emergency Operations and Public Advisory
The national government is running its containment strategy through a unified command framework established under the Public Health (Declaration of Formidable Epidemic Disease) Order, 2026, alongside the Public Health (Ebola Disease) Rules, 2026. The World Health Organization (WHO) has received formal notifications regarding the latest diagnostic developments.
The ministry confirmed that border points, trade corridors, and domestic transport networks remain fully operational without restrictions on movement or public gatherings.
Health officials urge citizens to maintain heightened vigilance and seek immediate medical evaluation at nearby facilities if experiencing symptoms including unexplained fever, severe fatigue, joint or muscle aching, vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual bleeding.
Officials remind the public that Ebola spreads through direct contact with infectious bodily fluids or contaminated objects rather than respiratory droplets, appealing for privacy for the impacted family while urging citizens to rely on official Ministry of Health announcements or contact the national hotline at 719 for verified information.
