Russian attack kills mayor among 27 reported victims as Zelensky orders negligence investigation
Ukraine’s latest devastating Russian attack has reportedly killed 27 people, including a mayor, according to Ukrainian authorities. However, President Volodymyr Zelensky has also accused Ukrainian officials or those responsible for handling the site of possible negligence following an explosion at an ammunition warehouse.
Zelensky announced that an investigation had been launched to determine whether safety regulations were violated and to identify those responsible for the tragedy.
“Those responsible for this tragedy must be held accountable for their actions,” the Ukrainian president said.
“Investigators from the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine are conducting a preliminary investigation, and criminal proceedings have been initiated over negligence. The regulations are clear: it is prohibited to store ammunition near homes or other residential areas.
The investigation will focus on whether ammunition was improperly stored close to residential buildings, potentially contributing to the scale of the casualties following the attack and subsequent explosion.
As Ukraine mourns the victims of the Russian strike, Kyiv is now investigating whether failures on its own side may also have worsened the deadly tragedy.
