Iris Kaingu’s victory in Mwandi has been petitioned by UPND losing candidate
United Party for National Development (UPND) Mwandi Constituency losing candidate Sibeso Sefulo has petitioned the election of Independent Member of Parliament Iris Kaingu in the Lusaka High Court.
Ms Sefulo is challenging Ms. Kaingu’s election on allegations that the parliamentary election was marred by bribery, corruption and undue influence on voters by her agents, allegedly with her knowledge and consent.
In his petition, Ms Sefulo further alleges that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) failed to adhere to proper electoral procedures during the conduct of the election, including the counting and announcement of results.
The UPND candidate has since asked the High Court to nullify Ms. Kaingu’s election and order a fresh parliamentary election in Mwandi Constituency.
Ms. Kaingu, who contested the August 2026 parliamentary election as an Independent candidate, was declared winner after polling 6,595 votes, narrowly defeating Ms Sefulo, who received 6,110 votes.
The Independent candidate won the closely contested Mwandi Constituency parliamentary seat by a margin of just 485 votes.
The petition now places Ms. Kaingu’s election before the High Court, where the court will determine whether the alleged electoral irregularities were sufficient to affect the outcome of the election.
