Millennials rejoice because Girls is officially returning to the small screen exactly one decade after it aired its final season.

Writer, creator and star Lena Dunham announced the exciting news on Tuesday, sharing that a five-episode revival will hit HBO Max next year.

In addition to Dunham, original cast members Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, and Andrew Rannells are all returning for the new season.

The group revealed the news in a joint Zoom call, which was recorded and posted to their respective Instagram accounts.

The show’s celebrity fans left gushing comments about the new season, including Gracie Abrams, Hannah Berner, Cara Cunningham, and Rita Ora.

Girls originally premiered on HBO in 2012 and became an instant phenomenon, winning critical acclaim and sweeping awards shows.

The series ended in 2017, but was later ranked as one of the greatest television shows of all time by The Guardian, Variety, BBC, Rolling Stone, and the New York Times.

Since the show ended, Dunham has revealed that she no longer speaks to Jenni Konner, who was the co-showrunner on Girls and a close creative partner of Dunham’s.

‘We always said we would only return to Girls if there was a specific story we were burning to tell,’ Dunham wrote in her memoir Famesick, which was released earlier this year.

‘I’ve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day. Then, right around my 40th birthday, they started talking to me in the shower. And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking, it’s pretty hard to get them to stop,’ she continued.

‘It’s rare that you get the chance to return to something that changed your life with the gift of hindsight and a whole new level of gratitude and understanding. I love these girls (and boy), our friends at HBO and all the people who have continued to discover the show and remind us afresh why we do this, which is the joy of being together … and the chance to wear yellow mesh.’

Last month, Dunham revealed that she welcomed a baby girl with her husband Luis Felber.

The actress gave up any possibility of carrying her child after electing to undergo a total hysterectomy in 2018 because of years of endometriosis-related pain.

So fans were surprised when she revealed that she and Felber had brought a daughter into the world with the assistance of a surrogate.

Dunham announced the birth in a touching op-ed written for Vogue.

Earlier this year, she spoke about coming to terms with not being able to carry her own children, which had always been her ‘dream.’

She made the decision to have her womb, cervix and an ovary removed after enduring chronic health issues and she acknowledged that it was ‘only in the aftermath of the surgery that I started to feel the weight of what had happened.’

Dunham explained on Today with Jenna and Sheinelle in April: ‘Some people don’t dream about being mothers, but I had, and it was a big part of my identity that I was going to do it someday in that way.

‘The amazing thing is, since then, I have met so many people who built their families in so many different ways, and I have really come to a place where I feel really excited. Whatever way it happens, I will feel so grateful.’

Dunham first revealed she was dating Felber during an interview with The New York Times back in April 2021.

‘It’s been a few months. I feel really lucky,’ she said, adding that Felber was, ‘the greatest person I’ve ever met.’

She was previously in a relationship with musician Jack Antonoff from 2012 to 2017.

Since Girls wrapped, Dunham has written multiple projects including the sex comedy Sharp Stick and the Netflix comedy Too Much.
