Ballon d’Or Ranking 2026: Kane, Yamal and Mbappé Lead Final Predictions Before Tonight’s London Ceremony

Football’s most coveted individual prize is handed out tonight, and the Ballon d’Or ranking 2026 race has narrowed to a tense two-man contest. Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal sit at the top of the betting, with Kylian Mbappé the best of the chasing pack.

The 70th edition takes place on Monday, October 26, at the London Palladium, the first time the ceremony has left France. The move honours Sir Stanley Matthews, the Englishman who won the inaugural award in 1956.

When and where to watch the ceremony

Kate Scott and Thierry Henry host, with the show starting at 8pm local time in London. For viewers in Nigeria, that means a 9pm WAT start, with red-carpet coverage beginning at 6pm UK time. Oddschecker reports that DAZN is showing the event live.

How the Ballon d’Or ranking is decided

Nobody can lobby for votes any more, because the ballots are already in. Voting closed at the end of Monday, September 28. Journalists from the 100 highest-ranked countries in the FIFA rankings vote, and the player with the most points wins. The performance window ran from August 3, 2025, to July 19, 2026, the day of the World Cup final.

That window matters. A full club season and a World Cup both count, so a player can build a case from either.

Ballon d’Or 2026 ranking: where the market stands

The table below orders the main contenders by the latest bookmaker prices available. Odds move constantly, so treat them as a snapshot.

Market position Player Club / Country Best price quoted Date of quote 1 Harry Kane Bayern Munich / England 8/13 19 October 2 Lamine Yamal Barcelona / Spain 11/8 19 October 3 Kylian Mbappé Real Madrid / France 22/1 5 October 4 Lionel Messi Inter Miami / Argentina 25/1 5 October 5 Rodri Barcelona / Spain 50/1 19 October

Oddschecker had Kane at 8/13 as of October 19, which implies roughly a 62% chance. The same report says Kane has been odds-on with every bookmaker since the middle of the month. Another tipster put him at 4/5 with bet365, with Yamal at 9/2.

A market that kept changing its mind

This was not a straight run for Kane. He was favourite for most of August and September, then Yamal took over once voting closed on September 28. Yamal was as short as 4/7 with one bookmaker on October 1. The market then reversed again over the following fortnight.

Period Favourite What happened After the World Cup (July) Yamal and Kane level Both were priced at 3.00, with Messi and Rodri joint third. August to late September Kane He led the market until voting closed. Early October Yamal He shortened sharply while Kane drifted. Mid to late October Kane He returned as the odds-on favourite.

Bookmakers do not see the ballots, so those swings reflect opinion and sentiment rather than inside knowledge.

The case for Harry Kane

Kane’s argument is built on numbers. He scored 73 goals in 65 games for Bayern Munich and England, and won the Bundesliga and the European Golden Shoe. That included 36 Bundesliga goals in 31 appearances and 14 in the Champions League, plus six goals in seven matches at the World Cup. He also completed more dribbles than anyone else in Europe’s top five leagues, with 225. Bayern added the DFB-Pokal to the league title.

A Kane win would make him the first Englishman to take the award since Michael Owen in 2001. He would collect it in his home city. The weak spot is the tournament. England did not go deep enough at the World Cup to strengthen his case.

The case for Lamine Yamal

If Kane owns the statistics, Yamal owns the trophies. He finished the season with 22 goals and 21 assists, and won La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup and the World Cup. He was world champion at 19 and was runner-up to Ousmane Dembélé in the 2025 voting. His 2025 tally was 1,059 points.

Recent history helps him. Five of the last seven winners in World Cup years came from teams that reached the final. A Yamal win would also make him the youngest Ballon d’Or winner ever.

The outsiders still in the conversation

Kylian Mbappé has the most eye-catching tournament record. He took the World Cup Golden Boot with ten goals, but his Real Madrid season finished without a trophy. He was also La Liga’s top scorer and broke the all-time World Cup scoring record. Without a club trophy to point to, voters may look elsewhere.

Rodri won the World Cup’s best player award, the Golden Ball. That helped Luka Modrić win the Ballon d’Or in 2018, though Rodri’s own injury-hit club campaign left his chances looking remote. Bookmakers still had him at 50/1.

Lionel Messi is up for the ninth time. He was the bookmakers’ favourite before the final, but dropped back after Spain won it. Argentina lost that final to Spain.

Ousmane Dembélé, the holder, is a long shot to retain it. He was priced at 25 after the World Cup. He won the Champions League and Ligue 1 again, scoring 25 goals with 14 assists.

Other names worth watching

Paris Saint-Germain have the most nominees, with ten players from the side that won a second straight Champions League. Spain follow with six nominees after their World Cup triumph. Bayern’s Michael Olise led the nominees with 35 assists, and he topped the World Cup assists chart with seven. PSG’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia helped win the European Cup but missed the World Cup. Those absences may cost PSG players with the voters.

On the women’s side, Alexia Putellas is among the favourites, while Aitana Bonmatí, winner of the past three awards, missed the shortlist after a season largely lost to injury.

What about the leaked “results”?

A report circulated this month claiming Yamal leads the real voting. The report offered no official table, and the Ballon d’Or’s own site publishes no interim ranking. Treat it as rumour until the envelope is opened.

Prediction: who wins tonight?

The favourite has a decent record. Dembélé was 1/6 on the day last year and won. That points to Kane, who suits the voting criteria well and has the market behind him. Yamal is a real threat, and the most plausible upset if the World Cup outweighs club goals. Mbappé, Rodri and Messi would need a surprise.
