Mentorship lessons from Stanley Uzochukwu’s rise

In** a land of massive hopelessness, the rags-to-riches story of Dr. Stanley Uzochukwu, the CEO of STANEL Group, is instructive. Many young people who desire to understudy role models in business integrity, ethical leadership, and power of vision would find his trajectory onto greatness, impressive. Describing him “as a street hustler who became a builder of men,” Ifeanyi Aniagoh, AI researcher in the University of Hertfordshire, UK, noted that, “His story is not merely the story of a young Nigerian who became successful. It is the story of what can happen when humility meets opportunity, when mentorship meets discipline, when wealth is converted to enterprise, and when enterprise is deliberatively designed to create room for other people.”**

Given his humble background, Uzochukwu knew that he needed a shoulder to lean on. There is nothing like self-made success. In the words of Alex Haley, “Anytime you see a turtle up on top of a fence post, you know he had some help.” At a young age, he realized that his life’s vision needed an external virile push. And he opened his eyes for the right person and struck a chord with him. The personality is Dr. Cosmas Maduka (COSCHARIS), the billionaire industrialist from Nnewi, Anambra State. Their paths crossed at the Nigeria’s precinct of presidential power, Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, and Uzochukwu refused to let go, noting that earning the confidence of great people to the extent that they could stake their hard-earned reputation for your success is one of the greatest rewards of strategic relationship.

He didn’t abuse the access. He carried himself with dignity. He was patient. He was not relating with a sense of entitlement. He was not quick to ask for help. Rather, he always wanted to add value to the man. Though he was in need of help, but he knew that the gift of a man makes way for him. By human nature, even those who live in abundance value goodwill. Uzochukwu craved to give COSCHARIS some money as a mark of honour. In some cultures, you don’t visit an elder or a king empty-handed. In the Bible, despite the wealth of King Solomon, the Queen of Sheba visited him with expensive gifts. However, initially, COSCHARIS suspected that the boy was up for something mischievous, perhaps to dupe him, but Uzochukwu’s persistent genuineness swept off the man’s feet. And in no time, not minding their age gap, they became friends.

But Uzochukwu was not carried away by being a big man’s friend. He was not into name dropping. Neither was he unmindful of the big picture. He managed the relationship with a good dose of circumspection. He wanted something greater than money and the visibility of a hanger-on. He longed for an impartation of the man’s grace, not minding the eye-rolling public. One day, at Hilton Hotel, COSCHARIS confessed that Uzochukwu ran into him, knelt down in full glare of the public, and demanded a fatherly blessing in form of words of prayer. When he could not dissuade him, he had to succumb to the young man’s pressure and prayed this way: “Lord, whatever virtue that is in me that this young man desires, grant it unto him.” As he was praying, Uzochukwu sneakily put N50,000 into the man’s pocket. COSCHARIS said that he was wowed by the young man’s bold attempt to dash him money. But by that singular gesture, Uzochukwu booked a golden place in the heart of COSCHARIS.

Over time, the relationship congealed to an enduring partnership. Uzochukwu had shown that he is teachable and trustworthy. The mentor-mentee relationship ripened to a matured level where striking the hot iron was the most responsible thing to do. The ball was already at the 18-yard box. To that end, Uzochukwu asked for a favour. He wanted COSCHARIS to act as a guarantor for his N150 Million loan request from the FirstBank. By then, the barriers of doubt had collapsed. Suspicion had evaporated. Trust had become the currency. And after examining the young man’s statement of account, COSCHARIS instead, advanced him the exact amount of money from his personal account without any collateral or interest. For Uzochukwu, it was a bounce back to reckoning in business that stagnated by the death of his business partner with a deep pocket. More importantly, “That episode reveals something deeper than access to capital. Plenty people receive financial help; fewer possess the discipline to protect the confidence behind it,” Aniagoh said.

Amazingly, Uzochukwu did not abuse the trust. He did what many young people would hardly do nowadays. And having stretched his entrepreneurial drive to the limits, the trickle down has been phenomenal. From little beginnings of STANEL Oil, he has built a conglomerate – (STANEL GROUP), which traverses oil & gas, manufacturing, and hospitality – where his classy brand will be difficult to surpass.

Indeed, Uzochukwu has washed his hands well and he qualifies to dine with the elders. As someone who knows the value of honour, he has turned the recently launched state-of-the-art The Delborough Hotel Lagos, owned by him, into a hotspot for honouring great men. In March 2025, he hosted a surprise 88th birthday for the former president Obasanjo at the hotel. The event was attended by at least three former heads of state in Africa. He has also shared brunch with Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, former president of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi, as well as a first-class traditional ruler from the Southeast, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha. Relishing his satisfaction with the accomplishment of The Delborough vision, he noted that the Scripture the Lord placed in his heart was, Isiaah 60:3 – “Kings will come to the brightness of thy rising.”

In all these, Uzochukwu is not swollen-headed. He understands the power of gratitude to God and to human vessels. Today, he is impacting lives, especially the youth. He is modelling integrity, respect, hard work, and sticking to one’s vision. He has also shown that social capital can open doors and that delayed gratification is not a waste of time.
