Video: California wildfire destroys homes as 16 000 people flee fast-moving flames

A fast-moving wildfire in Southern California has damaged or destroyed at least six homes and forced about 16 000 people to evacuate, as firefighters battle dangerous winds, high temperatures and dry conditions across the region, ***Cape {town} Etc ***reports.

The Norte Fire reportedly broke out in San Clemente on Friday before spreading towards neighbouring San Juan Capistrano in Orange County. Strong Santa Ana winds helped push the flames across the hills, threatening homes and prompting widespread evacuation orders.

By Saturday, firefighters had brought in additional resources and worked through the night to contain the blaze. However, with only a small portion of the fire under control, authorities warned that the danger had not passed.

Thousands evacuated as firefighters battle the blaze

The fire had burned approximately 570 acres (2.3 square kilometres) by Saturday morning and was reported to be about 5% contained. At least six homes had been damaged or destroyed, including properties on hillsides overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Images and footage shared online showed flames engulfing residential buildings as the fire moved through the area.

Hundreds of firefighters continued working to contain the blaze, while one firefighter suffered heat exhaustion during operations. Some evacuation orders were lifted on Saturday, but most remained in place as crews tackled active fire lines and smouldering debris.

Reportedly, Orange County Fire Authority spokesperson Greg Balta urged residents to follow official instructions and avoid affected areas.

‘We do have an active fire line, we do have wind, and we have a heat advisory in effect so there is still a risk.’

He appealed to the public to cooperate with emergency officials and stay away from areas where firefighting operations were continuing.

Santa Ana winds increase wildfire danger

The conditions driving the Norte Fire have also complicated efforts to bring other Southern California blazes under control. Santa Ana winds are a recurring feature of California’s autumn and winter weather. These dry winds blow from inland areas toward the coast, often bringing low humidity and rapidly increasing wildfire risk.

When strong winds meet dry vegetation, flames can spread quickly, making it difficult for firefighters to establish secure containment lines. Wind gusts in the Los Angeles area exceeded 40mph (64km/h), while temperatures climbed well above seasonal averages. Forecasters expected temperatures to reach 35°C in parts of Southern California on Saturday.

The US National Weather Service issued warnings over the combination of strong winds, dry vegetation and low humidity, while a heat advisory highlighted the additional risk of heat-related illness. Although the strongest winds were expected to ease after peaking on Friday, officials warned that dangerous fire conditions could persist into Saturday night.

Other wildfires continue to burn across the region

The Norte Fire was among several active wildfires reported across California, underlining the scale of the challenge facing emergency crews.

In Malibu, the Bryson Fire had burned approximately 147 acres, with containment reported at 52%. More than 400 firefighters worked to control the blaze, and evacuation orders affected areas of the Santa Monica Mountains.

Further south, the Henderson Fire in San Diego County had expanded to more than 3 100 acres (12.5 square kilometres). The fire also affected areas around Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.

The Henderson Fire had been reported as approximately 35% contained by Saturday morning. Its spread had forced authorities to close Interstate 5 twice, disrupting traffic along a major route connecting communities along the US West Coast.

The simultaneous fires have placed additional pressure on firefighting resources as crews work to protect homes, infrastructure and residents.

Despite progress in containing some of the fires, the wildfires had not been completely extinguished by Saturday.

Containment figures indicate how much of a fire’s perimeter firefighters have managed to secure. They do not mean the remaining area is necessarily safe, as flames can still spread beyond containment lines when winds strengthen, or conditions change.
