A Lesotho Foreigner Who Possessed Cash Rand Stolen From ATM Bombing in SA Finally Busted

A 52-year-old man from Lesotho has been arrested in Seraleng, near Boitekong, as part of an ongoing police investigation into a series of ATM bombings in the Bojanala Platinum District. Authorities allege that the suspect was found in possession of dye-stained banknotes believed to have originated from cash stolen during ATM explosions.

Police said the arrest followed an intelligence-driven operation targeting suspicious financial transactions involving damaged currency. Investigators had received information that dye-stained cash was being deposited into several bank accounts, prompting concerns that the money was linked to ATM bombing syndicates operating in the area.

Working alongside bank investigators, law enforcement officials traced the deposits and identified the suspect. Officers later searched his residence in Seraleng, where they allegedly recovered a quantity of dye-stained banknotes suspected to be connected to the ATM bombings currently under investigation.

During the search, police also seized several items of clothing from the suspect’s home. The garments have been sent for forensic analysis to determine whether they contain evidence that could link the suspect directly to any of the crime scenes. Investigators believe the forensic results may provide crucial evidence as the case progresses.

Authorities have not disclosed the total amount of cash recovered or indicated how many ATM bombing incidents the suspect may be connected to. However, police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that additional arrests are expected as more evidence is uncovered. Officials believe the operation has generated valuable leads that could help dismantle criminal networks responsible for the attacks.

ATM bombings continue to pose a serious challenge to law enforcement, as organised criminal groups often use explosives to access cash stored inside automated teller machines. Such attacks frequently cause extensive property damage and endanger nearby residents, businesses, and emergency responders.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 20 July 2026, on a charge of possessing suspected dye-stained banknotes. Police have reaffirmed their commitment to bringing everyone involved in the ATM bombing network to justice and urged members of the public to report any information that could assist with the investigation.
