Why DJ Cuppy Is Moving Beyond Pink After 17 Years

There was a time when a particular colour was enough to tell people who she was. It appeared in her hair, clothes, accessories and almost everything associated with her public image. It became so familiar that seeing her without it felt unusual.

For years, it was difficult to separate the Nigerian DJ from the colour that had become her trademark. But as time passed, questions about her changing appearance began to emerge. What was once a defining part of her identity gradually became something she no longer wanted to be limited by.

In a recent interview, DJ Cuppy has opened up about the story behind that identity, what it represented during the early years of her career and why she now feels comfortable expressing herself differently.

DJ Cuppy And The Beginning Of Her Pink Identity

Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy, began building her career in music at a young age. However, establishing herself as a female DJ came with its own challenges, particularly in an industry where men were more visible.

Rather than blending in, Cuppy chose to stand out. Pink became her way of expressing her femininity while making a statement about her place in the entertainment industry.

In an earlier interview with OkayAfrica in June 2024, she spoke about how the idea developed. According to her, she faced doubts because she was a woman trying to build a career in DJing.
She recalled hearing comments suggesting that women could not become DJs. Instead of allowing those opinions to discourage her, she decided to turn her femininity into part of her identity.

She explained that she did not just want to be known as a girl who DJs. She wanted to be recognised as someone who could DJ while embracing an unmistakably feminine appearance.
That was how the pink identity became an important part of her image. From her hair and outfits to her car and surroundings, the colour gradually became associated with her name.
What started as a way to express herself eventually became a recognisable part of the DJ Cuppy brand.

Why Pink Became More Than Just A Colour

Over the years, pink became much more than a fashion preference for Cuppy. It was part of how she presented herself to the world and one of the easiest ways for people to recognise her.

Her appearance became a talking point at public events, performances and social gatherings. Whether she was wearing pink hair, an all-pink outfit or surrounded by pink accessories, she maintained an identity that was difficult to mistake for anyone else’s.

The colour also represented confidence, individuality and the freedom to express herself without worrying about fitting into expectations.

During her November 2026 interview with GQ Poland, Cuppy explained what pink meant to her and why she embraced it for so many years. She said:

“Pink for me meant power, vibrancy, expression, unapologeticness, positionality.”

Her explanation gives a better understanding of why the colour remained such an important part of her public image. It was not simply about liking pink or wanting to dress differently. It represented how she wanted to be seen as a woman building a career in a competitive industry.
However, while the colour became closely associated with her identity, Cuppy was also growing beyond the young woman who first embraced it.

In her May 2026 interview with Tatler, she spoke about wanting people to pay more attention to her work in philanthropy and education rather than allowing her appearance to dominate conversations about her.
She acknowledged the importance of pink in her journey but made it clear that it would not be the only thing people should associate with her.

As she put it, “Pink will always be part of my story.”

17 Years Later: Why DJ Cuppy Decided To Move On

After years of being recognised for her signature colour, Cuppy’s changing appearance naturally attracted attention.
People began asking what had happened to the pink, particularly as she appeared more frequently in different colours and hairstyles.

Rather than allowing the questions to go unanswered, she addressed them during her interview with GQ Poland, explaining that her decision was connected to personal growth. “For me, style is about expression and expression always changes,” she said.

She acknowledged that pink had been her identity for many years but explained that she did not believe she should remain tied to one colour simply because people had become familiar with it. She explained:

“I want people to understand that actually growth is something that will always come. And I don’t think I should be boxed into a colour.”

Cuppy also reflected on her early years in the entertainment industry, recalling how she used pink to represent her femininity and maintain her place in a male-dominated environment. Looking back at that period, she said:

“Maybe also when I first started 17 years ago, a young girl that was using pink to represent her femininity and stay in the room.”

For her, the experience of building a career, entering different spaces and overcoming barriers has changed how she sees herself.
She explained that after going through many doors and breaking barriers, she no longer feels the need to use one particular colour to establish her femininity. She added:

“Now that I’ve been through a lot of doors and kicked down some windows, I feel like I can represent my femininity through any colour.”

Her explanation suggests that the change is not about rejecting the identity she spent years building. Rather, it is about recognising that she can still be the same person without maintaining the same appearance.

From Cuppy to Florence: Embracing a new chapter

DJ Cuppy

Cuppy’s decision to move beyond pink did not happen overnight. Signs of a new chapter had already become visible before her latest interview.
In May 2026, she spoke to Tatler about the personal changes she was experiencing and her desire to embrace more of Florence, the woman behind the DJ Cuppy persona.

Turning 30 had also influenced how she viewed herself and the things she wanted to prioritise.
For years, much of the public conversation around her involved her music, fashion and distinctive appearance. But as she entered a different stage of her life, she wanted people to see more of her interests and contributions outside entertainment.

Her work in philanthropy and education was becoming increasingly important to her, and she wanted those parts of her life to receive greater attention.
The transition was also reflected in her appearance. The familiar pink hairstyles and outfits gradually made room for other colours, different hairstyles and a wider range of fashion choices.

However, Cuppy has not suggested that she wants to erase the past or completely distance herself from the colour that helped establish her identity.
Her statement to Tatler that “Pink will always be part of my story” shows that she still appreciates what the colour represents.

The difference is that she no longer wants it to be the only thing people see when they look at her.

What Her Fashion Evolution Says About Personal Growth

For Cuppy, changing her style appears to represent something bigger than trying new fashion trends.
In her GQ Poland interview, she described her current style as “vibrant, grounded and ethnical”, explaining that it represents who she is.

She also spoke about the influence of her African heritage on her fashion choices, highlighting how clothing can communicate culture and tell a story before a person even speaks.

This suggests that while her style has changed, self-expression remains an important part of how she presents herself.
Her journey also reflects a different kind of confidence. At the beginning of her career, pink helped her establish a recognisable identity in an industry where she had to prove that being a woman was not a limitation.

Today, after years of experience and building her name, she appears more comfortable exploring different sides of herself without worrying about losing the identity people have come to know.
The pink era remains an important chapter in her career, but it is no longer the entire story.

Conclusion

For many people, changing a familiar part of their appearance can be difficult, especially when it has become closely connected to how others recognise them.
But perhaps the bigger challenge is allowing yourself to grow when people have become comfortable with the version of you they already know.

For DJ Cuppy, pink served its purpose. It helped her express her femininity, establish her presence and create an identity that people could easily recognise. Now, she is allowing herself the freedom to explore beyond it.

And while the pink era may no longer define her everyday appearance, it remains part of the journey that brought her here.
