October 25, 2026 sportnow Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz is convinced that the fast-approaching Carling Knockout Round of 16 match against TS Galaxy on Tuesday is just what his team needs to recover from their disappointing exit in the CAF Confederation Cup. Amakhosi faced heartache on Friday evening when Zambian side Red Arrows knocked them out on penalties, losing 3-2 after a goalless aggregate result over two legs at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Despite Da Cruz finding some solace in his side’s victory in the second leg within regular time, the Chiefs failed to convert their penalty opportunities, which allowed Red Arrows to progress to the group stage.
The Soweto giants are now turning their attention to domestic titles as they prepare to host TS Galaxy at FNB Stadium on Tuesday, eager to overcome their recent continental disappointment.
“It’s great that we have a quick game lined up as it allows us to shift our focus directly to the next challenge,” said Da Cruz, who is under mounting pressure at Naturena. “In my perspective, the next match is always the most crucial. We need to advance to the next round of the Carling Knockout.”
Da Cruz highlighted a growing list of injuries—including goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, who was sidelined just before the match against Red Arrows—as a significant factor contributing to their recent woes.
In spite of the disappointing outcome, Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. publicly expressed on Sunday that management continues to back the French coach and his technical staff.
“As a club, we want to reiterate our full support and confidence in the head coach and the entire technical team,” Motaung Jr. stated in a press release on Sunday.
“They maintain our trust as they implement a football philosophy and development strategy that we believe will ensure long-term success.
“Their professionalism, dedication, and commitment to enhancing the team daily remain commendable. The team is giving their all in every match to meet a high standard of performance, and on Friday, despite the result and the ongoing injuries, that fighting spirit was evident on the pitch.”
Nonetheless, with the Amakhosi winless in their last five matches across all competitions, failure to secure a quarter-final position at the Calabash on Tuesday will add more pressure on Da Cruz’s coaching reign.
In other Carling Knockout news, Golden Arrows became the first team to secure their spot in the quarter-finals after defeating Chippa United at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday.
They were followed into the last eight by Siwelele, who triumphed over Polokwane City 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw, thanks to two critical saves from goalkeeper Jody February.
