Democracy must protect Nigerians’ rights, dignity –Oluremi Tinubu

Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu has said democracy must go beyond elections to guarantee the rights, dignity and freedoms of Nigerians, insisting that citizens must remain at the centre of democratic governance.

She spoke, yesterday, in a message marking the 2026 International Day of Democracy, themed, “Bring Human Rights into Focus.”

Tinubu said the theme underscored the responsibility of democratic governments to respect and protect the rights and freedoms of every citizen as Nigeria continues to consolidate its democratic gains.

She said that 65 years after independence and more than 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, Nigeria had made significant progress, citing stronger institutions, peaceful transitions of power and increased citizen participation in governance.

“Sixty-five years after independence and over 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, Nigeria has made significant progress through stronger institutions, peaceful transitions of power and greater citizen participation in governance,” she said.

The First Lady, however, stressed the need for continued efforts to deepen democracy and ensure that governance delivers for all Nigerians.

“Let us collectively continue to work together to strengthen our democracy, ensure that it serves the interests of all Nigerians, and build a more peaceful and prosperous nation,” she said. She congratulated Nigerians on the occasion and called for renewed commitment to democratic values, human rights and the building of a more inclusive society.
