Oil Spill in Delta: When environment is destroyed from within and without – black tide ‘swallows 216 communities’

By Egufe Yafugborhi

The water at Odidi struggles to flow. It sits, thick, black, and dead. For seven months, the 28-inch Trans-Forcados Pipeline at the Kantu-Odidi axis, Warri South-West LGA has bled crude and associated gas into the creeks.

What was sighted February 19, 2026 as a single rupture has become a black tide that has swallowed over 216 communities, according to their leaders.

This is no longer just an oil spill. It is a war of narratives about who is destroying the Niger Delta — from within, or from without?

On one side, the Joint Investigation Visit, JIV, of February 20-21, 2026, conducted by the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA, officials and community representatives, gave a technical verdict: Corrosion and equipment failure. No sabotage.

On the other side, voices from inside the Niger Delta say the truth is more uncomfortable.

That Odidi has been a hub of illegal bunkering for 25 years and that hot-taps have turned the pipeline into Swiss cheese.

Between those two truths, the environment dies.

Seven months of nothing

Odidi Federated Community is angry because containment has been a theatre.

Comrade Justin Gbenekama, Chairman of the community, narrated: “This spill occurred on the 19th of February 2026, and up to this moment as we speak, the operator, Heritage Energy Operational Services, HEOSL, has not done anything properly to contain the spill.

“As you can see within the environment, even their recovery activities is not effective.”

He measured the scale of tidal spill: “And so six hours flow from this point, you get to Escravos area. And where we are standing is just five minutes drive to Forcados River, 10 minutes to the Escravos Bar. So the spill has spread very far.”

For the people, the consequences are immediate.

Drinking water is contaminated with hydrocarbons.

Fishing and farming are dead.

Cooking is a risk.

Gbenekama added: “And most importantly, there is no medical attention to any of the affected communities. And even relief materials that were brought were not adequate.”

He called the recovery method futile: “They will scoop, take it (spilled crude) back to their station in Isoko and inject it back to the same line, and the oil here will still come out in this point. That is an exercise in futility.”

His demand: “There should be immediate shutdown of the Trans-Forcados Pipeline and carry out the complete repair before operation will commence.”

It is a demand backed by law. Because the JIV ruled out third-party interference, HEOSL bears absolute liability under Nigerian environmental law.

The operator must fund 100 percent of clean-up and compensation.

And the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, in Suit No. FHC/PH/CS/132/2026, HRM Udogri Isaac I v. Heritage Energy & NOSDRA, ordered a mandatory injunction to cease discharge and clean up all impacted ecosystems.

No more business as usual

Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, says it has had enough. Its President, Dr. Doubra Collins Okotete, led youths to threaten total shutdown of OML 42, OML 30 and the Forcados Terminal.

“Today we are here not for jokes, but to shut down the operations of the Heritage Oil and Gas Services. This spill has been on for over seven months. The operators of Heritage are heartless, wicked,” Okotete declared.

He dismissed the sabotage argument: “This is not sabotage. This is pure equipment failure. And we all know this oil activity has been going on for a very long time.

“And this pipeline has been damaged for over six, seven months, yet no tangible has been done.”

He alleged: “All they do is to employ contractors to come and curtail oil, yet the contractors they have employed could not contain this oil because, what as the community chairman said, they come here scoop the oil, take it back to their station, inject it back to the same Trans-Forcados Pipeline, and this oil keep popping out, destroying our ecosystem, creating health hazard for our people.”

Okotete linked Odidi to the wider Niger Delta crisis, including Bille in Rivers State:

“The same thing is happening to Alakiri, Rivers State, same thing that happening to Bille, Rivers State, and other communities across the Ijaw nation that are being threatened, that today life expectancy has dropped.”

His message to Abuja was blunt: “President Tinubu, you are the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Minister, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, this is under your watch and today our river has been bastardized.”

And to the companies: “If they are tired of exploiting our oil, they should leave our environment.”

Uncomfortable truth from within

But long-time environmental monitor and Coordinator, Niger Delta Peace Coalition (NDPC), Zik Gbemre, offers a counter-punch that many in the creeks do not want to hear.

He said Odidi’s black tide is also self-inflicted.

“The Odidi axis in OML 42 has served as an active hub for illegal bunkering for over 25 years. What is happening there today is not a new development”, Gbemre said.

“The ongoing environmental degradation is largely artificial and directly tied to pipeline sabotage.

“Even after comprehensive cleaning and proper remediation, fresh spills reoccur within days because the root cause remains unchecked.”

According to him, the pipeline is being killed by repeated hot-taps: “What is unfolding across the Odidi and Egwa fields is the direct impact of illegal bunkering operations.

“Repeatedly placing hot taps on the same pipeline segments severely compromises structural integrity over time.

“Even when damaged points are clamped and repaired, the weakened metal around the hot taps continues to deteriorate, making future leaks inevitable.”

Gbemre, who has flown with Shell’s spill team over Odidi, said complicity is local:

“A total stranger cannot enter a community, transport heavy equipment, and place hot taps on high-pressure pipelines without the knowledge, authorization, or passive approval of host community leaders and influential actors.”

He listed it clearly: “Illegal bunkerers: Physical installation of hot taps, line breaching, and crude siphoning. Host Community leaders: Granting access, and providing cover.”

His warning is moral: “You cannot destroy infrastructure, profit from illegal trade, and present yourself purely as an innocent victim.

“You cannot demand millions in cleanup funds while harboring the very individuals who will re-break the pipes tomorrow.”

He also punctured the IYC claim that surveillance by Tantita and others has ended vandalism:

“It’s funny to hear the IYC boss claiming ‘no more vandalism in the operations space because TANTITA and other surveillance contractors are securing the space.

“That is joke of the year and media gymnastics to justify sustenance of the multi-thrillion naira surveillance contracts. Oil theft still thrives.”

Both sides in order

Media consultant and Coordinator, Journalists for Just Development of the Niger Delta, Austine Aghomi, says both narratives must be held together to understand the ticking bomb.

“Yes, NOSDRA is bound to do its work without bias when there are eventualities, just as oil and gas operators need to take responsibility on routine maintenance of their assets, particularly ageing pipeline from failure,” Aghomi said.

He added: “What is equally concerning, however, is the realisation that unrestrained assets vandalism, particularly tapping into oil wellheads, flowlines and pipelines to steal crude oil now helps to hasten the ageing of pipelines beyond manufacturers’ set lifespan.

“The lines suffer repeated cuts from oil thieves. Over time, assets operators get overwhelmed by repeated repairs and ultimately forced replacement earlier than normal.”

Heritage Energy, through its Community Relations Manager Jeremiah Oharisi, told protesting women: “Heritage is more than willing to do the right thing.” But trust is gone.

The pipeline is 50, its life was 25

The hard fact remains. Most trunklines in the Niger Delta, including Trans-Forcados, were laid in the 1970s with a 20-25-year design life. They have done double that, battered by corrosion outside and hot-taps inside.

Whether the cause is rust or bunkering, the effect is the same: Odidi is dying. And if Odidi is not clamped permanently, if Bille’s gas leaks are not stopped, if the Trans-Forcados is not replaced, the black tide will come to the next community.

The environment is being destroyed from without by ageing assets and corporate negligence. And it is being destroyed from within by an illegal economy that feeds on the same pipes.

Until both are stopped, no clean-up will be final.
