Some traders at the Kaneshie Market in Accra say they are worried about losing their source of livelihood as construction works under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project are set to begin.
The traders say they have been informed that they will have to vacate the area for about six months to make way for the construction of a major drainage channel as part of efforts to address flooding in the area.
According to the traders, although they acknowledge the importance of the project and believe it could help improve drainage and reduce flooding, they are concerned about how they will survive during the period of relocation.
They fear that staying away from their trading activities for six months could leave them without income to support themselves and their families.
Speaking to Adom News reporter Prince Owusu Asiedu ahead of the commencement of the project on September 7, some of the traders appealed to the authorities to consider their plight and provide measures to cushion them during the construction period.
The traders said they understand the need for development but stressed that their livelihoods must also be protected.
They expressed concern that without any form of support or alternative means of trading, they could struggle to provide food and other basic necessities for their families.
Some drivers who also spoke to the Adom News reporter said they had been allocated a new location where they could relocate and continue their businesses.
