The Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni Association has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to ensure a credible 2027 general election, while calling on Nigerians to reject voter apathy.
The association made the call during a road walk for good governance and credible elections in Abuja, organised as part of activities for its 2026 International Convention.
The Global President of the association, Prof. Ikechukwu Umeh, said democracy could only work effectively when citizens participated in the electoral process and exercised their civic rights.
Umeh urged political parties, INEC and the electorate to play their respective roles in accordance with the law during the 2027 election.
He said the association was advocating that government ensure citizens benefited from the dividends of democracy.
The Chairman of the 2026 Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni International Convention Planning Committee, Dr. Obinna Uyaemezina, urged INEC to adhere strictly to electoral rules ahead of the 2027 elections.
Uyaemezina also called for support for the electoral commission to enable it conduct a free and fair election, saying, “When elections are free and fair, that is the only way one can say that there is democracy.”
He said good governance should be reflected in reduced poverty, access to healthcare and education, good roads and security of lives and property.
The Chairperson of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni Association, FCT Chapter, Mrs. Nonye Umeodika, urged security agencies to shun corruption and electoral malpractice and remain impartial during elections.
She said voters would be encouraged to participate when they were confident of their security at polling centres.
Umeodika also urged Nigerians to come out and vote, saying voter apathy could undermine efforts to improve governance.
The Chairman, Media and Publicity Sub-Committee of the 2026 Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni International Convention Planning Committee, Stanley Nwosu, described the road walk as part of the association’s advocacy for transparent governance and a credible electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Nwosu urged INEC, government and security agencies to do the needful to ensure that the 2027 election was credible and acceptable to Nigerians.
He also called on members who could not participate in the road walk to join the advocacy for a credible electoral process.
