African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa has pledged to transform Ekurhuleni into a major economic and logistics centre around OR Tambo International Airport and establish a university of science and technology if the party wins the metro in the upcoming local government elections.
Speaking at a campaign event, Ramaphosa outlined the proposals as part of the ANC’s efforts to secure support in key Gauteng municipalities. He said the party intends to maximise the economic potential of the area surrounding South Africa’s busiest airport to attract investment, create employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth.
Ekurhuleni’s proximity to OR Tambo International Airport gives it a strategic advantage in international travel, cargo transportation and trade. According to the ANC, developing the surrounding area into a major logistics hub could strengthen manufacturing, encourage business development and improve economic opportunities for residents.
Ramaphosa also promised to establish a university specialising in science and technology. The proposed institution would equip young people with skills needed in industries such as technology, logistics and manufacturing, while helping address the challenge of youth unemployment.
However, the ANC’s promises come amid criticism from opposition parties over persistent service delivery problems, infrastructure backlogs and unemployment in the metro. Some residents have also questioned why similar development plans were not fully implemented previously.
The ANC maintains that its proposals are achievable and would require cooperation between government, businesses and other stakeholders.
With the local government elections scheduled for 4 November 2026, the party is intensifying its campaign across Gauteng. Ekurhuleni voters will ultimately decide whether the ANC receives another opportunity to implement its proposed economic and educational projects.
