Holding power does not make someone immune to mental health issues.

When political discourse touches on the psychological state of those in high office, a curious double standard often emerges.

If an ordinary citizen walks into a public square declaring themselves a divine monarch, demanding that neighbors bow to their supreme authority, society rightly identifies a mental health crisis requiring professional intervention.

Yet, when a head of state orchestrates the exact same theater from a presidential palace, a starkly different reaction takes hold. As they demand veneration, manufacture ancient royal lineages, and organize grand rituals to bestow titles of transcendent glory upon themselves, the world far too often dismisses it as mere political strategy or eccentric posturing. It is time to strip away the protective veneer of statecraft and confront a uncomfortable reality.

When political leaders exhibit an unquenchable thirst for deification and grandiosity, they are not merely playing tough politics. They are displaying textbook signs of deep-seated psychological instability. Throughout human history, the pursuit of total control has frequently crossed the line from ruthless ambition into severe personality pathology. Psychiatrists and political psychologists have long documented how unchecked authority acts as a catalyst for underlying mental health disorders, particularly malignant narcissism, severe paranoia, and megalomania.

Leaders consumed by delusions of grandeur demonstrate a profound detachment from reality. They surround themselves with sycophants who validate their inflated self-image, systematically dismantling any institution or individual that dares to offer a reality check. Consider the historical trail of devastation left by rulers who succumbed to these psychological defects. When Jean-Bédel Bokassa bankrupted the Central African Republic to stage a lavish coronation crowning himself emperor, it was not a rational strategy for national governance—it was the unhinged manifestation of pathological grandiosity. When Saparmurat Niyazov renamed the months of the calendar after himself and erected a rotating gold statue in Turkmenistan, or when Idi Amin declared himself the “Uncrowned King of Scotland” while his nation fractured, these were not the actions of stable minds navigating statecraft.

Equally unhinged was Mobutu Sese Seko, who built a multi-million-dollar marble palace complex in the jungle and forced state television to display his face descending from the clouds as a deity every evening before the news. In Iraq, Saddam Hussein commissioned grand monuments featuring giant casts of his own hands and ordered a Quran written in his own blood to cement his status as a sacred figure.

Across history, the pattern repeats: from Caligula declaring himself a living god in Rome to Nicolae Ceaușescu destroying historic Bucharest to build a monumental presidential palace for his personal glorification. These are not isolated eccentricities of leadership. They were the outward symptoms of a mind consumed by megalomania, where the leader’s internal fantasy completely eclipses the living reality of the people they govern. According to established scientific research, the hallmark of this mental instability is a dangerous cognitive dissonance. A leader suffering from grandiose delusions genuinely begins to believe in their own myth.

They view themselves not as temporary public servants bound by constitutions, but as destined figures, sacred rulers, or reincarnations of historic empires. In their mind, their personal survival and ego become synonymous with the survival of the state itself. Consequently, any dissent is no longer viewed as legitimate political opposition, but as treason against the cosmos. This detachment from basic reality carries catastrophic consequences for ordinary citizens. When a ruler’s mental health is dominated by grandiose narcissism, their decision-making becomes entirely distorted.

National budgets are squandered on monuments, palaces, and vanity projects designed to soothe an insatiable ego, while public infrastructure collapses, poverty deepens, and basic services vanish. The leader’s clinical lack of empathy allows them to ignore the suffering of millions, viewing the population not as human beings with rights, but as props in a grand personal performance. Worse still, grandiosity rarely exists in a vacuum; it is almost always paired with acute paranoia.

Because the grandiose leader’s self-image is fundamentally fragile, any refusal by the public or political peers to endorse their divine status triggers intense rage and fear. To protect the delusion, the ruler turns to purges, systemic fear, and arbitrary cruelty. The quest to be worshiped as a king or living deity invariably ends in a nightmare of repression for the nation forced to endure it. Recognizing these behaviors as symptoms of mental instability is not an academic exercise; it is a matter of national survival. Society must stop treating extreme political grandiosity as a normal feature of authoritarian rule.

When leaders begin mapping out personal mythologies, seeking royal crowns, or framing their authority as infinite and permanent, it is a urgent signal that power has corrupted their psychological stability. True strength in leadership is defined by humility, emotional maturity, constitutional discipline, and a grounded commitment to human dignity. The moment a leader demands to be elevated above reality itself, they demonstrate an undeniable truth. Those who believe they are born to rule as gods or kings are, in truth, the most psychologically unfit to rule at all.
