Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) warned Mitumba traders against importing second-hand underwear.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 22, KEBS stated that it intercepted a consignment of used undergarments while inspecting a shipment of imported used clothing and shoes.
It said that the importation of used innerwear was strictly prohibited in the country and was in contravention of applicable standards.
“During an inspection yesterday, KEBS officers intercepted a consignment containing used undergarments, which are prohibited under the applicable requirements,” the statement read in part.
The Bureau notified the second-hand clothing traders of other attire that is prohibited to be imported as used.

“Importers are reminded to ensure that consignments do not contain prohibited used textiles, including briefs, brassieres, camisoles, socks, stockings and swimwear,” KEBS wrote.
KEBS reiterated that it will continue enforcing the applicable requirements to protect consumers and ensure compliance with Kenyan standards.
Earlier, Director General Esther Ngari flagged the misuse of the KEBS Standardisation Mark (S-Mark) on beverages containing khot (miraa/muguka), commonly marketed as joba juice.
Ngari clarified that certification permits are valid only for the products covered by the approved scope of certification and do not extend to khat-infused beverages or any other products outside that scope.
She added that KEBS currently excludes khat and khot-derived products from its product certification scheme because of the regulatory considerations relating to khat and its psychoactive constituents, including cathinone and cathine
The DG declared that KEBS has not issued Standardisation Mark permits for any khat-infused beverages. She further stated that the Bureau revoked the certification of the firms that imprinted the marks on their products.
“Accordingly, the display of the KEBS Standardization Mark, or any claim of KEBS certification, on khat-infused beverages constitutes a misrepresentation of their certification status and may attract enforcement action under the Standards Act, Cap. 496.
“KEBS has revoked certification permits in identified cases of non-compliance and will continue to undertake market surveillance and take appropriate action against manufacturers and traders found misusing the Standardization Mark,” the DG wrote.
