Two Kenyans prepare for Mt. Manaslu summit in Nepal

Kenyan mountaineers Swabra Swaleh Breik and Daniel Moenga are preparing for a final summit attempt on Mount Manaslu after successfully completing their acclimatization rotations on the 8,163 metre mountain in Nepal.

The two are among hundreds of climbers taking part in Nepal's Autumn 2026 climbing season on the world's eighth highest mountain. However, heavy snowfall has temporarily halted summit attempts as climbers wait for improved weather and safer conditions.

Mt. Manaslu, which is 8,163 metres (26,781 feet) above sea level, is among the world’s 14 mountains higher than 8,000 metres.

Breik and Moenga's expedition adds to Kenya's growing presence on the mountain. On September 24, 2023, Kenyan mountaineers Cheruiyot Kirui and James Muhia made history by becoming the first Africans to summit Mount Manaslu without supplemental oxygen.

Their achievement came after a challenging ascent of the Himalayan peak, which is also known for its steep terrain and unpredictable weather.

Breik and Moenga’s next stage of the expedition will depend on weather conditions, with the climbers currently waiting for a safe window to begin their final push to the summit.
