The Falconets of Nigeria conceded once in each half to suffer a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Spain in their first match of the FIFA women’s Under-20 World Cup in Poland.
The Spaniards provided a dominant spectacle against Moses Aduku-led Falconets who could not cut out the European U19/U20 champions at the Sosnowiec stadium on Monday evening.
Marisa Garcia and Alba Cerrato scored the goals in the first match for both nations in Group F, in a match the Falconets barely laid a glove on their opponents.
Spain hugged possession and created openings in the early minutes, and duly took the lead on 13 minutes when a sequence of passes dazed the Falconets into submission, allowing Garcia to run into the box and slot home a cutback from the wing for a well deserved goal.
Nigeria tested the Spaniard goalkeeper once in the first half and despite a double change at halftime, could not find a way to penetrate Spain’s defence during their brief spells on the ball.
Spain duly doubled their lead and sealed victory on 73 minutes when Cerrato collected a pass in the box and slotted in beyond Nigeria goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma at her near post.
Nigeria, two-time Silver medalist at the women’s U20 world cup, have the chance to bounce back in their second match of the tournament against China PR who defeated New Caledonia 5-0 in their earlier clash.
