JOHANNESBURG - Stefan Joel Govindraju is 37 years old is a medical doctor and businessman.

He is accused of being the alleged beneficial owner of numerous companies used to win contracts for medical supplies and equipment at Tembisa Hospital.

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has linked him to a web of 75 companies and 1,237 contracts between 2020 and 2023 valued at about R600 million.

He appeared at the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for plea and sentencing. However, the matter has been postponed to next year.

Govindraju faces 70 counts including fraud, theft, money laundering and corruption. The SIU revealed that apart from the money he siphoned through his companies, about R100 million in bribes were allegedly paid to hospital officials.

Investigators alleged Govindraju's bids looked competitive and linked companies submitted cover quotes. Meanwhile false or non-compliant documents helped them through the procurement process.

The wider Tembisa Hospital scandal was brought to light by Gauteng Health whistleblower Babita Deokaran who was murdered in 2021.

The SIU has since identified three major alleged procurement syndicates in its broader investigation into R2 billion on the hospital spending. Govindraju's alleged network is one of them.

He was previously granted R200,000 and is now entering into a plea bargain with the state.
