Government Mobilises 200,000 Kenyans for One-Hour Tree-Planting Exercise on Mazingira Day
The government is targeting 200,000 Kenyans to plant six million trees within one hour as the country prepares to mark Mazingira Day. President William Ruto is expected to lead the national celebrations in Endebess, Trans Nzoia County, as the government steps up efforts to increase tree cover and restore degraded ecosystems.
The ambitious target is part of a wider environmental conservation plan that seeks to encourage public participation in tree growing and climate action. The exercise is expected to bring together government agencies, local communities and other stakeholders in a coordinated effort to promote environmental protection.
During a Cabinet meeting, the government reviewed preparations for the celebrations and reaffirmed its commitment to a whole-of-government approach to environmental conservation. The discussions focused on tree growing, ecosystem restoration and other measures aimed at addressing the effects of climate change.
Beyond the one-hour tree-planting exercise, the government plans to restore 462,299 hectares of degraded landscapes under Phase III of the Green Zones Development Support Project. The initiative is expected to support the rehabilitation of damaged ecosystems and complement ongoing tree-growing programmes across the country.
The restoration programme is also expected to contribute to efforts to protect natural resources and improve the condition of areas affected by environmental degradation. The government has identified landscape restoration as an important part of its broader conservation agenda.
Another key area of focus is the protection of mangrove forests along Kenya’s coastline. Mangroves play an important role in supporting marine life, protecting shorelines from erosion and storing carbon. Their conservation is therefore considered essential in strengthening the country’s response to climate change.
The planned activities reflect the government’s push to combine large-scale tree planting with longer-term environmental protection measures. While the six-million-tree target is expected to draw attention during Mazingira Day, the restoration of degraded land and protection of existing ecosystems remain important parts of the wider plan.
The government is also seeking to encourage Kenyans to take a more active role in protecting the environment beyond the national celebrations. Sustained tree care, restoration programmes and community participation will be important in ensuring the initiatives deliver lasting benefits.
