SAFA president Danny Jordaan said the salary of newly appointed Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane remains a private matter, after the association officially unveiled Mosimane at its headquarters on Tuesday morning.
Safa announced early last month that its National Executive Committee (NEC) had resolved to offer Mosimane the Bafana coaching job to succeed Hugo Broos.
However, Mosimane only signed a few weeks later following reports that he had turned down an initial offer of R5 million annually upon learning that Broos was reportedly earning R16.8 million a year.
Addressing Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts and Culture, the association disclosed that it had since offered Mosimane an improved annual salary of R10 million – a figure his camp reportedly accepted alongside other terms.
With the issue still top of mind, Jordaan – who officially unveiled Mosimane – together with chief executive Lydia Monyepao, who handled contract negotiations – remained tight-lipped on the coach's pay.
“No, we are not answering the salary of the coach,” Jordaan said. “If you want to ask the coach, he’s here. If he wants to disclose his salary, it’s his business. Disclose your salary, then you can ask him. That is not a question.”
Mosimane, who returned to the national team 14 years after his initial tenure, successfully negotiated to bring in trusted lieutenants Kabelo Rangoaga and Musi Matlaba as his assistants. A third assistant and a new goalkeeper coach will be announced in due course.
The 62-year-old returned to Bafana with immense club success, boasting over 21 trophies, including three CAF Champions League titles. Expectations are high that his experience – and results – will match his salary.
