October 1 Declared Public Holiday As Nigeria Marks 66th Independence Anniversary
The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement issued on Wednesday by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad, urging citizens to use the anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s journey since independence and to renew their commitment to building a united, peaceful and prosperous nation.
He also stressed the importance of peace and stability to national development, calling on Nigerians to uphold the patriotism and commitment to the country demonstrated by its founding fathers.
According to the minister, Nigeria’s diversity remains one of its greatest strengths. He expressed confidence that a more prosperous nation can be achieved through collective determination and a shared commitment to national development.
