Zone III Aquatics: Kenya ends Uganda’s Relay streak by 0.03 seconds in Kampala Thriller

Uganda continued to make waves at the 11th Africa Aquatics Zone III Championships, but Kenya delivered the most dramatic moment of Day Three, edging the hosts in the boys’ 4x100m freestyle relay as Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Djibouti and Somalia added their own stories to a fiercely competitive championship.

The swimming pool at Kampala International School Uganda (KISU) has been a stage for regional rivalry, personal milestones and emerging talent, but few moments at the 11th Africa Aquatics Zone III Championships have captured the tension of Day Three quite like the boys’ 15-and-over freestyle relay.

For much of the race, Uganda looked set to maintain its unbeaten relay run. Then Kenya came charging back, turning what appeared to be a comfortable Ugandan lead into a breathtaking finish decided by the smallest of margins.

When the clock stopped, Kenya had won in 3:36.83, with Uganda touching the wall in 3:36.86. Three-hundredths of a second separated the two sides a gap so tiny that it barely seemed enough to settle a contest that had carried the hopes of two swimming nations.

It was a finish that demanded a second look at the scoreboard. The Kenyan contingent erupted into celebration, its cheers filling the poolside. Uganda, by contrast, watched in near silence, caught between the disappointment of losing a race it had looked poised to win and the hope that its remaining events would restore the hosts’ pride.

Uganda began the race with confidence, with Ryland Andrew Matthew setting an aggressive pace and opening what appeared to be a substantial advantage over the chasing swimmers. The hosts looked in control, and the prospect of another relay victory seemed increasingly realistic.

Jonathan Kaweesa followed, with Alex Rumanyika and Matthew Mwase completing the quartet in the sequence described from the race.

But relay swimming is a test of more than individual speed. It is about maintaining momentum, executing exchanges and ensuring that every swimmer carries the work of the previous leg forward.

As the race progressed, Uganda’s advantage began to shrink. Kenya, refusing to surrender, steadily closed the gap. By the time the final swimmers were fighting for the wall, the contest had become a duel of nerve and execution.

Mwase was left with a difficult assignment: recover the ground Kenya had gained and still find enough speed to win. He fought to the finish, but the Kenyan team held on by the narrowest possible margin.

Kenya came first in 3:36.83, Uganda second in 3:36.86 and Tanzania third in 3:39.16. Burundi and Rwanda finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Across the other three relay events on Day Three, the hosts stood on top of the podium each time.

Uganda’s girls’ 14-and-under team won the 400m freestyle relay in 4:14.54, finishing ahead of Tanzania in 4:20.56 and Kenya in 4:24.87. The quartet of Gabriella Eleanor Ndyanabo, Mackayla Ssali, Shivon Nagginda and Gabriella Opolot Asima delivered a composed performance to secure the title.

The boys’ 14-and-under team produced an even tighter contest with Kenya. Uganda clocked 3:49.18, just 0.57 seconds ahead of the Kenyan quartet, which finished in 3:49.75. Tanzania took third in 3:58.06.

Uganda’s senior women also secured relay honours. The team of Gloria Muzito, Kirabo Namutebi, Kirabo Paloma and Crystal Ssemanda finished the 400m freestyle relay in 4:06.77, comfortably ahead of Kenya’s 4:25.58.

Beyond the relays, Uganda’s leading swimmers have continued to provide some of the championship’s most compelling performances.

Ryland Andrew Matthew has been one of the names to watch. He won the boys’ 17-and-over 50m butterfly in 24.90 seconds, finishing ahead of teammate Alex Rumanyika, who clocked 26.24.

Kaweesa also delivered for the hosts, winning the boys’ 15–16 50m butterfly in 26.19 seconds. He edged Kenya’s Andrew Ogola, who finished in 26.34, in another contest that demonstrated the fine margins separating the region’s best young swimmers.

In the 100m freestyle, Matthew Mwase responded with a victory in the boys’ 17-and-over category, touching in 53.42 seconds ahead of Kenya’s Nathan Matimu in 53.70. Tanzania’s Austin Okore finished third in 54.58.

There were also performances from Daniel Rukundo, who won the boys’ 17-and-over 200m individual medley in 2:15.73, and Tara Kisawuzi, who finished second in the girls’ 17-and-over 200m individual medley in 2:41.49.

Among the most recognisable names in the Ugandan contingent are Commonwealth Games swimmers Gloria Muzito and Kirabo Namutebi.

Both have represented Uganda on a major international stagethis year, and their presence at KISU adds experience to a team that also features a promising younger generation. Muzito, who holds Uganda’s national record in the 100m freestyle according, won the girls’ 17-and-over 100m freestyle in 54.65 seconds. Namutebi finished second in 1:02.85, while Tanzania’s FilberthaDemello took third in 1:03.14.

Namutebi also has a national breaststroke record, making the pair important figures in Uganda’s senior swimming landscape. Their experience gives the younger swimmers a visible example of what sustained performance and international exposure can offer.

The championship, however, has also shown that established names must keep earning their places at the front. Kenya’s Victoria Okumu has been one of the standout competitors, winning the girls’ 17-and-over 200m individual medley in 2:35.68. She finished ahead of Uganda’s Kisawuzi and Tanzania’s Demello.

Tanzania have repeatedly placed swimmers among the leading finishers. Austin Okore, for example, finished third in the boys’ 17-and-over 100m freestyle and second in the 200m individual medley. He clocked 54.58 in the freestyle and 2:18.26 in the medley, giving Tanzania valuable podium finishes in two different events.

Tanzania’s Captain Mark Tibazarwa also finished third in the boys’ 17-and-over 200m butterfly in 2:24.40, only 0.41 seconds behind Burundi’s winner, Tony Lilia Uwineza. Uganda’s Thembo Katende took second in 2:24.18, making it a close three-way contest among swimmers from three countries.

Burundi, meanwhile, have shown that they can challenge for individual honours. Uwineza’s 200m butterfly victory in 2:23.99 was one of the clearest examples, while Burundi’s swimmers have also featured in the sprint and relay events.

Rwanda’s presence has added another layer to the competition. Its swimmers have faced deep fields in several events, gaining valuable exposure against some of the region’s leading performers. Such encounters are important in a championship designed not only to reward medals, but also to test athletes against new opponents and help teams measure their progress.

Djibouti have also made their presence felt. Barkat HoumedHoussein finished third in the boys’ 17-and-over 50m butterfly in 26.58 seconds, behind Uganda’s Ryland and Rumanyika.

One of the quieter but meaningful stories of the championship belongs to Somalia.

Somalia brought just two swimmers to Kampala: siblings Aya Ofleh Adams and Elyas Ofleh Adams both 12 and Under. That milestone matters beyond the number of medals won. For a small delegation, simply taking part provides an opportunity to gain international racing experience, test preparation against regional competitors and build a foundation for future participation.

Aya has already shown she can hold her own in the pool. In the girls’ 12-and-under 100m freestyle, she finished fifth in 1:10.54. She also placed sixth in the girls’ 12-and-under 200m individual medley in 2:57.57.

By the end of Day Three, Uganda and Kenya had given the strongest evidence of a close contest at the front of the championship. And as the competition closes today, One of the two countries will claim championship. The championship concludes this Saturday at KISU.
