Ineos are giving Carrick a Middlesbrough repeat in the most unexpected way, Man Utd shocked him

Manchester United and Middlesbrough are poles apart in stature, finances, and ambition, but Michael Carrick is confronting an unexpected similarity due to Ineos.
Much has been written about how Ineos failed Michael Carrick this summer by signing just three players, none of whom were first choice.
At the same time, it’s also impossible to shake off the feeling that Carrick is failing to get the best out of the squad at his disposal.
Both of those things are true, but Carrick could be forgiven for experiencing the most unexpected familiar feeling from his Middlesbrough days at Old Trafford.
Middlesbrough kept daring Michael Carrick to perform miracles
Carrick’s spell at Middlesbrough crashed and burned suddenly, which is what Man Utd fans think is happening at this club as well.
However, if the failure is similar, then the success must be acknowledged too, and the reason behind it is similar as well.
Carrick took over a Middlesbrough team fighting relegation and had them in the mix for promotion by staging a miraculous turnaround.
That squad was simply not as good as Carrick had them playing, and it was powered by some truly outstanding performances from individuals who hadn’t hit those heights in their careers before.
Sounds familiar? That’s exactly what happened at United last season during Carrick’s interim spell, which gave him the Man Utd job.
He performed miracles to get this team to finish third last season, but unfortunately for him, the similarities don’t end there.
Middlesbrough kept selling his best players and replaced them with unknown quantities, daring him to keep performing miracles instead of empowering him in the market.
That was understandable to an extent over there, but Carrick must have been shocked by United repeating the same mantra.
Ineos must have shocked Carrick
Carrick would have thought that his miracle at Carrington last season would be rewarded with backing in the market. Instead, Ineos repeated the Middlesbrough playbook.
Instead of building on the surprise success, the owners sat on their laurels and dared Carrick to repeat the miracle that was simply unsustainable.
Carrick has again become a victim of his own success, and this time surprisingly so, because he wouldn’t have thought United, who should be a “big fish” in the market, would settle for that summer after a successful season.
He is back to where he failed at Middlesbrough, and while he deserves criticism for not bringing the best out of the current squad, the lack of ambition is infectious.
Lisandro Martinez put the nail on the head when he said that the players effectively feel let down, and it’s impossible for a manager to shake them out of a crisis that’s not of his making.
United were supposed to be different, but as it stands, they repeated the Middlesbrough repeat in an area that was least expected – the transfer market – and it must have shocked Carrick.
