By Dr Masimba Mavaza | In the past few days, the name of *Her Excellency, Amai Auxilia Mnangagwa, First Lady of the Republic of Zimbabwe*, has been dragged into public discourse in connection with an ongoing legal matter involving Ms. Kelsea Tadiwa Tafirenyika.
This is regrettable. And it must stop.
1. The First Family is an Institution, Not a Party to Every Case*
Zimbabweans must remember that when a person is prosecuted, it is *not on behalf of the First Family*. It is *on behalf of the State*.
The State prosecutes crimes against the laws of Zimbabwe. The President, the First Lady, and the First Family are not complainants, witnesses, or parties to every court matter that happens in this country.
In the matter of Ms. Tafirenyika, *no member of the First Family is a witness. No member of the First Family is an accused. No member of the First Family is a party.*
To therefore manufacture a link where none exists is both dishonest and dangerous.
*2. Opportunists Must Not Use Litigation to Scandalize the First Family*
What we are witnessing is the work of opportunists and detractors who seek to exploit any case, however unrelated, to tarnish the image of the First Family.
They take a private legal dispute and twist it into a national scandal. They take a name and attach it to a narrative that was never created by the person concerned.
This does a disservice not only to Her Excellency, but to the dignity of the Office of the President and to Zimbabwe as a nation.
Ms. Tafirenyika, through her legal representatives, has herself issued an apology and clarification dated *26 August 2026, Ref: AR/EC/psm*. She states clearly that it was *never her intention to denigrate the First Lady or the First Family*, and that the association was manufactured by others seeking to cause disharmony. That must be respected.
*3. We Must Guard the Image of Our First Lady*
*Amai Auxilia Mnangagwa* has earned the respect of the nation through her work: feeding school children, supporting widows, fighting drug and substance abuse, and championing the health and welfare of women and children.
She represents the motherhood of the nation. To allow her name to be dragged into speculation and gossip without cause is to attack the values of respect, _hunhu/ubuntu_, and unity that we claim to uphold as Zimbabweans.
Let us be clear: *Disagreeing with a court case is not the same as attacking the First Family.*
Let us separate the two. Let us debate issues on merit, in court, and not through manufactured scandals on social media.
*4. A Call for Responsible Discourse*
We call upon media houses, commentators, and citizens to exercise restraint.
Zimbabwe is bigger than gossip. Our institutions are bigger than speculation.
As a nation, we owe Her Excellency, the President, and the entire First Family our respect and support. They serve the country under immense public scrutiny. The least we can do is protect their dignity when they are not involved.
Let the law take its course. Let the First Family be.
