President William Ruto has responded to Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s visit to Rigathi Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence, adding a new dimension to the political contest taking shape ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kalonzo’s meeting with the former Deputy President comes at a time when opposition leaders are holding consultations aimed at building a united political front to challenge Ruto in the next presidential election.
During his recent remarks, Ruto revisited his political history with Kalonzo, recalling how he supported the Wiper leader during his 1992 parliamentary contest in Mwingi North under the KANU government.
The President used the historical connection to make a fresh appeal to Kalonzo, urging him to consider supporting his re-election bid rather than continuing to engage opposition leaders seeking to unseat him.
Ruto’s remarks come amid growing political activity, with different camps attempting to strengthen their influence and secure strategic partnerships before the election campaigns gain momentum.
Kalonzo’s visit to Wamunyoro has attracted attention because of Gachagua’s increasingly prominent role in opposition politics. Their discussions are being closely watched for possible implications on coalition negotiations, regional voting blocs and the selection of a joint presidential candidate.
Gachagua has been engaging various opposition figures as leaders explore ways of coordinating their political activities. Kalonzo’s participation in these consultations could prove significant, given his previous experience in presidential contests and his influence in the Ukambani region.
However, meetings between opposition leaders do not automatically translate into a formal coalition agreement. Key questions surrounding leadership, power-sharing and the eventual presidential candidate remain central to the opposition’s efforts.
For Ruto, the emerging engagements present a political challenge as he seeks to consolidate support across different regions while defending his administration’s record.
As the 2027 election approaches, the exchange between the President and Kalonzo’s political camp underscores the importance of alliances and historical relationships in Kenya’s evolving political landscape. Whether the Wamunyoro meeting produces a stronger opposition partnership remains to be seen.
