Highlanders at 100: Former Players and Fans Celebrate Bosso’s Glorious History

Highlanders Football Club has reached a remarkable milestone, celebrating 100 years of football, tradition and passionate support.

As Bosso marks its centenary, former players and supporters are revisiting memories that shaped the club’s identity.

Founded in 1926, Highlanders remains one of Zimbabwe’s most historic football institutions. Its journey reflects generations of talent, dedication and unwavering loyalty.

The club began as Lions Football Club before becoming Matabeleland Highlanders Football Club in 1936. It eventually adopted the shorter Highlanders Football Club name in 1975.

However, its significance extends beyond trophies and football results. For many supporters, Bosso represents family traditions, unforgettable matches and lifelong friendships.

One lifelong football enthusiast recalled following Highlanders despite supporting their rivals, Zimbabwe Saints. He explained that the club’s outstanding players always attracted his attention.

“I grew up very much interested in football, but I was a staunch Zimbabwe Saints fan. However, I could not afford to miss a Highlanders game because I admired some of their players.

“We used to carry lunch packs to the stadium, and you could hardly find a place to sit. I vividly remember the Caps United-Highlanders game which was decided by a goal from Shambo. Highlanders had the best players, including Peter Nkomo, Mercedes Sibanda, Alexander Maseko and Fanuel Ncube. Rambo was my favourite because, even as a defender, he competed with strikers for goals,” he said.

Another supporter highlighted the unforgettable 2006 squad. He particularly remembered Johannes Ngodzo and Agrippa Sibanda.

“The class of 2006 remains in my memory. There was Johannes Ngodzo, Agrippa Sibanda and others. No matter the circumstances, we love our club,” he said.

Families and Former Players Celebrate Bosso’s Legacy

Highlanders’ influence also stretches across generations of families. Some supporters have passed their affection for the black and white colours to their children.

One passionate supporter, who regularly occupies the Soweto Stand, described the club’s importance within her family.

“I am Junior Makunike’s mother and a permanent occupant of the Soweto Stand. We love our club, and we tend to have arguments at home when Highlanders loses. We need young stars to take over the club. We admire the combination of Andrew, Monga and Shelton,” said one supporter.

Meanwhile, former players have joined the celebrations by recognising Highlanders’ influence on their football careers.

Former player Gift Lunga Junior congratulated the club while challenging the current squad to deliver silverware.

“Congratulations to Highlanders for turning 100. It is a milestone. Highlanders should lift the Chibuku Cup to give the fans something to take home. The club has touched different generations,” he said.

Former striker Graham Ncube also reflected on his achievements during his time at Bosso. He remembered the club’s championship-winning generation and his individual successes.

“For me, there are many memories about the club. I fondly remember our seniors lifting four championships on the trot. We tried, but we were runners-up twice. I remember being part of the Soccer Stars and becoming the top goalscorer. It was because of Highlanders,” he said.

Highlanders has also organised several activities to commemorate its historic anniversary. These include a musical gala as part of the centenary programme.

As the celebrations continue, the club faces an important responsibility: protecting its rich heritage while building another successful generation.

The contributions of legendary players, administrators and supporters remain central to that mission. The late Ndumiso Gumede also occupies an important place in Highlanders’ history.

Ultimately, Bosso’s first 100 years represent much more than football achievements. They celebrate a century of identity, community and memories that continue to unite generations.
