Shatta Wale Reveals He Wanted to Become a Lawyer Before Music Became His Calling

Ghanaian dancehall artiste Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., popularly known as Shatta Wale, has revealed that he originally wanted to become a lawyer before choosing music, which he says called on him so strongly that he believed God had a special purpose for him in Ghana’s music industry.

The musician explained that his decision to pursue music was driven by a powerful passion and a conviction that his presence in the industry was part of a bigger plan.

“I originally wanted to be a lawyer, but music called on to me so strongly, because God needed a Shatta Wale in Ghana’s music industry,” he said.

His remarks offer insight into how he views his journey from aspiring to enter the legal profession to becoming one of Ghana’s most recognisable dancehall performers.

Shatta Wale has previously spoken about his childhood ambitions, revealing in a 2024 interview on GTV’s morning show that his father wanted him to become either a lawyer or a pilot. According to the artiste, his father believed his confidence and outspoken nature would make him suited to a career in law.

However, Shatta Wale said his interest in music developed at an early age. He recalled writing songs on the walls of his room while growing up, describing music as a passion he could not ignore. He eventually chose to follow that interest rather than the professional path his father had envisioned for him.

Over the years, Shatta Wale has built a strong following through his dancehall music, energetic performances and distinctive public persona. His career has also been marked by his confidence in his abilities and his belief that his work has a wider purpose beyond entertainment.

The artiste has recently reiterated that his musical journey is driven by faith, purpose and a desire to inspire young people who may feel limited by their backgrounds or circumstances.

In a statement following ShattaFest 2026, he said his journey was not about competing with other musicians but about demonstrating that people from humble beginnings could achieve success.

His latest comments reinforce his belief that choosing music over law was not simply a change of career plans but a decision that allowed him to fulfil what he considers his calling in Ghana’s entertainment industry.
