2027: INEC Deploys Early-Warning System to Prevent Election Failures

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled a real-time operational tracking system to detect and resolve potential problems before they undermine Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The new system will give INEC headquarters real-time access to information on the preparedness of its offices across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, marking a major shift towards early intervention in election management.

INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, announced the initiative on Monday in Lagos while opening a two-day Strategic Operational Workshop for the commission’s Administrative Secretaries.

At the centre of the new strategy is the Administrative Secretary Master Operational Tracker Template, a data-driven tool designed to provide the commission with up-to-date information on election preparations nationwide.

The tracker will be connected to INEC’s Election Monitoring and Support Centre, enabling the commission to monitor critical activities, including the movement of electoral materials and the training of personnel.

Amupitan said the system was intended to ensure that operational challenges were identified and addressed before they became major obstacles to the conduct of the elections.

He charged Administrative Secretaries, whom he described as the “engine room” of INEC’s state-level operations, to maintain discipline and ensure strict compliance with the commission’s procedures.

The chairman also warned against practices capable of compromising the credibility of the electoral process.

«“If you tolerate shortcuts, shortcuts will multiply. If you tolerate political interference, neutrality will deteriorate,” Amupitan said.»

He urged the officials to learn from recent off-cycle elections, particularly the Osun State election, and convert the lessons into operational standards that could be applied nationwide during the 2027 elections.

The commission’s strategy will focus on five major areas considered critical to election preparedness.

These include voter registration and the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards as the national voter register approaches 100 million voters.

INEC will also strengthen the management of election logistics and sensitive materials, covering their receipt, auditing, storage and deployment.

Technology will receive particular attention, with officials expected to improve their management of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, the INEC Results Viewing Portal and the Candidate Registration and Results Management System.

The commission will equally prioritise the recruitment, vetting and technology training of ad-hoc election personnel, while strengthening financial compliance through workflow automation and adherence to procurement regulations.

The renewed preparations come against the backdrop of increasing political activities ahead of the 2027 elections, with political parties already positioning themselves for the various federal and state contests.

According to INEC’s timetable, the final register of voters is expected to be published on January 11, 2027.

The presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, while campaign activities are expected to end on February 18.

A possible presidential run-off is scheduled for February 28, with governorship and State House of Assembly elections slated for March 6.

With less than five months to the opening of the 2027 election calendar, INEC’s new tracking mechanism is expected to provide the commission with an early-warning system for identifying gaps in personnel, logistics, technology and other critical areas before they threaten the polls.
