Petro de Luanda Lodge CAF Complaint Against South African Referee Abongile Tom

Angolan football giants Petro de Luanda have reportedly lodged an official complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) against South African referee Abongile Tom following their 2-0 defeat to Scottland in the CAF Champions League.

According to a report by KickOff, the Angolan club has raised concerns about Tom’s officiating during the encounter, with a controversial red-card decision reportedly emerging as a major source of frustration. The complaint has brought renewed attention to the match officials and the decisions made during the continental competition.

Petro de Luanda entered the match hoping to secure a positive result, but Scottland proved too strong, claiming a 2-0 victory. The defeat was a setback for the Angolan side, while the reported protest has added another layer of controversy to an encounter that has attracted attention beyond the final score.

The red-card incident appears to be central to Petro de Luanda’s concerns. In competitive continental matches, disciplinary decisions can significantly influence the course of a game, potentially affecting a team’s tactical approach, defensive organisation and chances of securing a favourable result.

However, the precise grounds of Petro de Luanda’s complaint have not been fully established, and further details would be needed to determine exactly which decisions the club is challenging.

CAF, as the governing body responsible for African club competitions, may examine formal complaints submitted by participating teams in accordance with the relevant competition regulations. Nevertheless, lodging a complaint does not automatically establish wrongdoing by a referee or guarantee disciplinary action.

For Scottland, the victory represents an important result in their Champions League campaign, providing an opportunity to strengthen their reputation against established opposition.

Petro de Luanda will now await any response to their reported complaint as attention shifts towards CAF’s possible handling of the matter.

Neither the full details of the protest nor any subsequent action by CAF have been confirmed in the information available. Further statements from the club or the governing body could provide clarity on the controversy surrounding Tom’s performance.
