At least 150 houses have been affected after a powerful explosion at a Buchwa Iron Mining Company (BIMCO) explosives magazine in Redcliff.
The blast happened on the night of 10 October and was felt across surrounding areas. Residents and shop owners in several suburbs, including Torwood, reported shattered windows, collapsed ceilings and other structural damage and are now counting their losses.
The Municipality of Redcliff said preliminary findings indicate the explosion may have resulted from an attempted theft, although investigations are still underway.
Redcliff mayor, Alderman Vincent Shangwa Masiiwa, also warned residents against visiting the site, saying it remains unsafe.
Redcliff town clerk Gilson Chakauya said assessments are continuing and the number of affected properties could change. The latest figure of 150 is cumulative, following an initial assessment on Sunday that identified at least 70 affected properties, including homes and business premises.
“We have so far established that at least 150 houses have been affected. These figures are cumulative, and assessments are continuing, so the numbers may change,” he said.
“We have held a Civil Protection Unit meeting to discuss the situation and map the way forward, particularly in terms of public safety and assistance to affected residents. What we continue to urge people is to stay clear until there is absolute safety.”
Investigations into the cause of the explosion are continuing.
The municipality has encouraged residents whose properties were affected to submit their details on 0710 721 439 or 0776887 585.
