Naturena Waiting For Answers: Former Sundowns Star Weighs In On Chiefs’ Title Chances

Naturena Receives Brent Carelse Verdict As Chiefs Title Hopes Face Fresh Questions After Derby Defeat

Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Brent Carelse has weighed in on Kaizer Chiefs’ current situation following their disappointing 2-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates in the latest Soweto Derby, offering an assessment that brings renewed attention to Amakhosi’s ambitions in the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign.

The former South African footballer has provided a balanced perspective on the encounter between the two Soweto giants while also addressing the bigger question surrounding Chiefs’ ability to challenge for the league championship this season.

The derby, played at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 31 October, produced an entertaining contest, with Orlando Pirates eventually walking away with all three points.

Despite entering the encounter with confidence, Chiefs were unable to overcome their traditional rivals, who demonstrated their quality at important moments.

Yanela Mbuthuma opened the scoring for the Buccaneers in the 24th minute, putting Pirates ahead before Pule Mmodi restored parity for Amakhosi just six minutes later.

However, Tshepang Moremi delivered the decisive moment in the 55th minute, finding the back of the net to secure a 2-1 victory for the defending champions.

The result was particularly disappointing for Chiefs because they had opportunities to take control of the contest, especially during the first half.

Fernando Da Cruz subsequently acknowledged that the defeat had made his team’s title ambitions more difficult, although he insisted that there was still considerable football remaining in the campaign.

Carelse’s assessment comes at an important moment for Amakhosi, who are attempting to restore their position among South Africa’s leading football clubs.

The former Sundowns midfielder’s balanced assessment of the derby provides another perspective on the difference between the two teams and the challenges facing Chiefs.

For Amakhosi, the biggest concern remains their ability to translate promising performances into victories.

The Soweto giants have shown encouraging moments this season, but dropped points and inconsistency have complicated their pursuit of the championship.

Their supporters are particularly desperate to see the club return to the summit of South African football after years without a Betway Premiership title.

Chiefs last won the league championship during the 2014/15 season under Stuart Baxter.

Following the derby defeat, Da Cruz admitted that winning the championship had become considerably more difficult.

The French coach, however, refused to abandon his ambitions, pointing to the remaining fixtures and the possibility of improving performances once injured players return.

He also highlighted the importance of developing the younger members of his squad, explaining that experience and consistency would be essential if Chiefs were to compete successfully.

His comments suggest that the technical team remains focused on improving the squad rather than allowing one disappointing result to derail the entire campaign.

The question surrounding Chiefs’ championship ambitions will continue attracting attention as the season progresses.

Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates have established themselves as major contenders, meaning Amakhosi face a difficult challenge if they want to close the gap.

Nevertheless, writing off a club of Chiefs’ stature at this stage would be premature.

The remaining fixtures provide opportunities to collect important points, rebuild confidence and demonstrate that the team can compete against the strongest opponents.

For Carelse, the discussion surrounding Chiefs’ title ambitions highlights the importance of assessing both their performances and their ability to deliver consistent results.

Ultimately, the responsibility rests with Da Cruz and his players to respond positively.

Amakhosi supporters will be hoping that the derby disappointment becomes a turning point rather than another setback in their pursuit of long-awaited league success.
