Sudan extends Adre border crossing with Chad for humanitarian aid

Sudan’s government has extended the opening of the Adre border crossing with Chad for humanitarian aid for another three months, until Dec. 31, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

The extension, effective from Oct. 1, allows international relief organisations and agencies to continue delivering humanitarian assistance through the crossing, the ministry said in a statement.

The government said the decision was aimed at facilitating the delivery of aid to civilians affected by the conflict across Sudan and enabling humanitarian organisations to operate in coordination with United Nations agencies and international, regional and national organisations.

The ministry said the government and humanitarian partners are working on monitoring and oversight arrangements at the crossing. It called on international partners to complete the necessary administrative and technical arrangements to improve oversight and transparency and ensure aid reaches those in need.

The ministry said keeping the crossing open reflects the government’s commitment to constructive cooperation with the international community and humanitarian partners.

The Adre crossing connects Chad with Sudan’s Darfur region and has been used to deliver humanitarian supplies to people affected by the war between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023. Aid agencies regard the crossing as an important route for deliveries into Darfur.

The latest extension follows a series of three-month renewals by Sudanese authorities. The previous extension was due to expire on Sept. 30.
