“Between A Government That Spent GH¢66m And One That Spent GH¢55m, Who Was Prudent?” – Kofi Adams

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has questioned the financial management of Ghana’s participation in the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups, comparing the amounts spent by the two governments and the performance of the Black Stars in the competitions.

According to a report by TV3 Ghana on October 11, 2026, Kofi Adams raised concerns about the expenditure on the national team, arguing that the figures from the two tournaments raise questions about the prudent use of public funds.

The minister noted that the government spent more than GH¢66 million on Ghana’s participation in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the Black Stars failed to progress beyond the group stage. He contrasted that amount with the GH¢55 million reportedly spent on the 2026 World Cup campaign, during which Ghana progressed beyond the group stage.

Using the figures, Kofi Adams questioned which of the two governments demonstrated greater financial prudence, considering the difference in expenditure and the teams’ performances at the respective tournaments.

He also highlighted the cost of appearance fees paid during the 2022 World Cup, stating that the amount exceeded the total expenditure for Ghana’s entire 2026 campaign.

The comparison has brought renewed attention to the financial commitments involved in Ghana’s participation in major international football competitions. Such expenses can include player bonuses, appearance fees, travel, accommodation and other logistical arrangements necessary for the team and its officials.

The minister’s remarks also raise questions about how sports funding is planned, managed and accounted for, particularly when public resources are used to support the national team.

While the expenditure figures provide a basis for comparison, a comprehensive assessment of the two campaigns would also require details of the specific expenses covered and the financial arrangements made for each tournament.

Kofi Adams’ comments have placed financial accountability in Ghanaian football at the centre of the discussion, with the comparison highlighting the importance of balancing spending with performance when managing public funds for the Black Stars.
