16-year-old girl shot dead in Delft informal settlement

A 16-year-old girl has been shot dead inside a shack in Tsunami informal settlement Delft, where a resident said deadly gun violence has become "part of our daily lives"

Reports of gunfire came from an informal dwelling in the Tsunami informal settlement after 9pm, where the teen was fatally wounded inside.

The teen sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her body and was declared deceased on the scene.

The shooters fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that a murder case has been opened for investigation.

“Delft police registered a murder case for investigation following a shooting incident on Sunday evening, 30 August 2026, at about 9.30pm, in Tsunami informal settlement, Delft, where a 16-year-old girl was shot and fatally wounded.

“Police members attended to the crime scene, where they found the victim inside an informal dwelling with gunshot wounds to her body. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel, Twigg confirmed.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and the motive for the attack is yet to be established. No arrests have been made yet.”

Ward 106 councillor Nobanathi Matutu, said she was unaware of the shooting, when contacted.

One resident they heard about the shooting, but it does not come as a surprise.

“I heard of the shooting, but I don’t know anything else, except that a girl was shot. At this point, it is not shocking; as unfortunate as it is, it is normal and part of our daily lives,” the resident said.
