Look: SPCA inspector runs 10km for rescued dog Stormie

Cape Town SPCA inspector Nakita Sutter will trade her work boots for running shoes on World Animal Day as she takes on the 10km Blouberg Marathon with a very personal reason to run, Cape {town} Etc reports.
Nakita’s connection to the cause began during heavy flooding in Manenberg, when she was out helping animals in distress. There, she found a mother dog, Stormie, caring for her litter in a makeshift shelter. One of the puppies had already died from the cold.
Stormie and her surviving puppies were taken into the** Cape of Good Hope SPCA** for emergency care. As the weeks passed, the pups grew stronger and were eventually adopted. Stormie, meanwhile, stayed close to Nakita.
Through daily walks and the gradual rebuilding of trust, a rescue mission became something much more personal. When the last puppy left for its new home, Nakita adopted Stormie herself and had her own name added to the dog’s microchip.
From one rescue to thousands more
Stormie’s story is also part of a much bigger push by the SPCA to tackle the number of unwanted animals entering its care.
Four SPCA staff members are running the Blouberg Marathon’s 10km event today, with inspectors Yaseen and Nakita, mobile clinic team member Yamkela and Adoptions team member Brent all taking part. Each sees a different side of the problem.

Inspectors witness what can happen when unwanted litters are born. The mobile clinic takes sterilisation services into communities where transport and access can be barriers, while the adoptions team cares for animals who need another chance.

Their target is ambitious: 10 000 sterilisations this year, helping prevent unwanted puppies and kittens from being born in the first place.
A run with a reason
The SPCA is also at Eden on the Bay for World Animal Day, where supporters can visit its stand, shop merchandise and make donations towards the campaign.

The message behind the run is simple. Every sterilisation can mean fewer unwanted litters, fewer animals at risk and, ultimately, fewer Stormies needing to be rescued.
And somewhere along the Blouberg route, there will be one rescue dog whose story has already given her human a pretty good reason to keep going.
