Alhaji Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Bunza, the Accord Party gubernatorial candidate in Kebbi State, has promised to pay N500,000 minimum wage to civil servants in the state if elected.
Addressing journalists in Birnin Kebbi at the weekend, the gubernatorial candidate said the take-home pay of Nigerian workers does not match the reality on the ground.
Sani-Abdullahi Bunza spoke at the Candidates Engagement Forum’, organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kebbi State Council.
The candidate lamented that civil servants were subjected to trauma and untold hardship due to unpopular government policies, adding that such policies were gradually driving workers into hopelessness.
“Let me categorically make my point clear: if I am elected Governor of Kebbi, I will ensure that the least paid worker goes home with N500,000.
“This is with a view to improving workers’ welfare because they are the engine room of every nation’s development; therefore, they must be treated with dignity.
“Nigeria has the money to pay workers a living wage, not a minimum wage. In Nigeria today, a worker is just a slave to those in positions of authority. I want to change the narrative if elected,” he assured.
He assured that he was not contesting for personal aggrandisement but “I am contesting to liberate Kebbi and the people of Kebbi.”
The gubernatorial candidate identified security as one of his topmost priorities, insisting that the present governments at all levels were not doing enough to end banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities in the state and the country at large.
He observed that the security of the country was tied to those in the corridors of power and their families, adding that there had never been a day a governor, senator, House of Representatives member, minister or a member of their families was kidnapped.
The candidate pledged to tackle the issue of security head-on to give the people of Kebbi a sense of hope and peace.
On agriculture, he said, “If I am elected, I will ensure that agriculture is truly transformed because I am a farmer; I know the in-and-out of farming.
