Tema Police intercept 2,213 slabs of suspected Indian hemp on River Volta

The Tema Regional Police Command has intercepted an outboard-powered wooden canoe carrying 29 sacks of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The interception was made by the Marine Police Detachment at Ada during a routine patrol on the River Volta at Tuanikopey Island around 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026.

According to a statement from the Police, the occupants abandoned the canoe and fled after spotting the patrol team.

A search of the canoe uncovered 2,213 slabs of the suspected narcotic substance, wrapped in yellow cellotape.

Police also found 14 25-litre gallons, 12 of which contained pre-mixed fuel, as well as two Yamaha outboard motors.

The suspected narcotics have been sent to the Ada District Police Headquarters, while arrangements are underway to transport the other items to the station for further investigations.

The Tema Regional Police Command says efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest the persons who abandoned the canoe and its contents.

The Police have cautioned the public against trafficking and transporting narcotic substances and urged anyone with information on the owners or occupants of the canoe to report to the nearest police station.
