They Thought We Were Crazy: Laporta Exposes Why Barcelona Rejected R4.6 Billion PSG Bid For Yamal

Barcelona Rejected R4.6 Billion PSG Offer for 17-Year-Old Lamine Yamal, Laporta Reveals

Barcelona’s decision to reject a staggering €250 million (approximately R4.6 billion) offer from Paris Saint-Germain for teenage sensation Lamine Yamal has once again highlighted the Spanish giants’ determination to protect one of football’s most valuable young talents.

Former Barcelona president Joan Laporta revealed that the Catalan club turned down the enormous proposal when Yamal was just 17 years old, despite the financial implications of rejecting such a significant amount of money.

“When PSG offered us €250 million for Lamine Yamal and we turned it down, he was 17 years old. Some people thought we were crazy,” Laporta said, according to reports by football media outlets.

The revelation provides further insight into Barcelona’s long-term strategy and the club’s belief that Yamal represents much more than a potential transfer fee.

The reported offer came in 2024, when Yamal was rapidly establishing himself as one of the most exciting young footballers in the world. His outstanding performances for Barcelona and Spain attracted international attention, particularly after his influential role in Spain’s successful Euro 2024 campaign.

At a time when Barcelona were navigating significant financial challenges, accepting such a massive offer could have provided considerable financial relief. However, the club chose to prioritise its sporting ambitions and retain a player viewed as central to its future.

Yamal’s rapid development has strengthened the argument behind that decision. The winger has become an influential figure in Barcelona’s attack, combining exceptional dribbling ability, creativity, composure and an impressive understanding of the game despite his young age.

His performances have also drawn comparisons with some of football’s biggest names, increasing his commercial value and making him one of the most recognisable young stars in the sport.

For Paris Saint-Germain, the reported pursuit reflected the club’s ambition to secure elite attacking talent following Kylian Mbappe’s departure to Real Madrid in 2024. However, Barcelona’s refusal demonstrated that financial power does not automatically guarantee success in the transfer market.

The reported €250 million proposal would also have surpassed the €222 million PSG paid Barcelona to sign Neymar in 2017, which remains one of football’s most famous transfers.

Yamal’s future has since been further protected by a long-term contract with Barcelona, reinforcing the club’s determination to keep him at the heart of its sporting project.

For Barcelona supporters, Laporta’s revelation represents a statement of ambition. Rather than cashing in on a teenage prodigy, the club chose to invest its faith in a player it believes can help deliver major trophies for years to come.

Ultimately, rejecting such an extraordinary offer was a significant gamble, but Barcelona’s message remains clear: Yamal is a cornerstone of the club’s future, not simply another asset to be sold to the highest bidder.
