‘Aya pon de beat’ builds a name in the makeup industry

By profession, Helena Michael is an economics teacher and radio producer, but over the past five years she has also established herself as a professional makeup artist known as “Aya pon de beat”, turning her passion for art into a thriving business in Windhoek.

Michael, who has been practising makeup artistry since 2020, specialises in premium, post-production, corporate and bridal makeup.

Through dedication and continuous improvement, she says her skills and client base have grown significantly over the years.

“I have always had an interest in art, but I never got the opportunity to pursue it directly. I interpreted my creativity and artistic passion through makeup,” she explained. Based in Windhoek, Michael operates a studio that caters to a variety of clients and occasions.

Her services are particularly sought after for weddings, corporate events, studio productions and professional photoshoots.

As graduation season unfolds across the capital, demand for makeup services has increased considerably. Michael noted that this period is among the busiest times of the year for beauty professionals.

“Graduation season is very busy, but I always try to manage my bookings properly to avoid overlaps and ensure every client receives quality service,” she said.

She added that the graduation period consistently brings an increase in clientele, with many graduates seeking professional makeup services to mark
one of the most important milestones in their lives.

Despite the growth of her business, Michael said the industry still presents challenges, particularly in the areas of marketing and gaining recognition in a competitive market. Nevertheless, she remains focused on maintaining high standards and ensuring customer satisfaction. She relies on client feedback and reviews to assess her work and improve her services. “Feedback from clients is very important because it helps me understand their experience and continue delivering quality work,” she said.

Michael believes the makeup industry in Windhoek is experiencing growth, with more professionals entering the field and increasing appreciation for makeup artistry as a profession.

“The industry is growing exponentially, and there is so much positive development taking place,” she said. Her journey from educator and broadcaster to successful makeup artist highlights how passion, creativity and determination can open doors to new opportunities while contributing to Namibia’s expanding beauty industry.
