The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won all the local government chairmanship seats contested in Saturday’s Local Government Area (LGA) elections in Yobe and Enugu states.
In Yobe, the State Independent Electoral Commission declared the results on Sunday at its headquarters in Damaturu, the state capital, following the conclusion of voting, counting and collation of results across the state.
In Enugu State, the party was declared the winner in all 17 chairmanship positions and 260 councillorship seats.
The Executive Chairman of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), Professor Christian Ngwu, said that the election was free and fair, adding that it was conducted according to the rules guiding the Commission, and “subsequently, we are issuing the winners with certificates of returns.”
Similarly, declaring the results, the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YSIEC) chairman, Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Yabani, described the conduct of the election as “hitch-free”, saying the exercise was successfully conducted across all the 178 electoral wards and 17 LGAs.
Yabani said 10 political parties participated in the election, fielding candidates for the chairmanship positions across the 17 LGAs and councillorship seats in the 178 wards.
He said, “This robust participation reflects how keenly contested the elections were in several local government areas in the state.”
According to him, following the close of polls on Saturday, votes were counted and collated, with councillors’ results declared at the ward levels, while chairmanship results were declared at the respective local government collation centres.
The commission’s results showed that the APC won all 17 chairmanship seats.
Despite the APC’s sweep of the chairmanship positions, two opposition parties won councillorship seats in the election.
The African Peoples Party (APP) won a councillorship seat in Fune LGA, while the Action Democratic Party (ADP) secured a councillorship seat in Karasuwa LGA.
The YSIEC chairman said the commission would continue with the necessary processes arising from the concluded election.
The Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Yobe State chapter, Comrade Umar Adamu Jajere, has commended the peaceful conduct of the 26 September local government elections in the state.
Jajere, who spoke during his acceptance speech at the NUJ Secretariat in Damaturu, described the peaceful conduct of the poll as a testament to the democratic environment created in the state.
He said the enabling environment had allowed IPAC and political parties to operate freely, without fear or favour, and described the election as free, fair, credible and successful.
The IPAC chairman further commended Governor Mai Mala Buni for providing logistics, security and moral support to the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YSIEC), and for allowing the will of the electorate to prevail.
He urged political stakeholders to sustain the spirit of tolerance, dialogue and peaceful participation beyond the election, stressing the need to strengthen democratic institutions and promote the interests of the people.
Also in Enugu, Ngwu, announced the results after the collation exercise on 26 September 2026.
He declared APC candidates winners of the chairmanship and councillorship contests on Sunday.
According to the ENSIEC boss, the APC won all 260 councillorship positions across the state’s 260 political wards.
Ngwu told the winners that, having satisfied the requirements of the law, they have been returned fully elected after scoring the highest number of valid votes cast,
He congratulated them and urged them to see their success as a call to duty.
He appreciated the security agencies and other stakeholders for their support and reiterated the commission’s commitment to conduct free and fair elections.
It would be recalled that the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) conducted elections into the 17 Chairmanship and 260 Ward Councillorship positions in the state on Saturday.
Speaking after collecting his certificate of return, Chairman of Enugu South Local Government Area, Chief Caleb Ani, attributed the landslide victory of APC candidates to the massive developmental works of Gov. Peter Mbah.
Ani urged the state’s residents to vote for Mbah en masse in the forthcoming 2027 General Election to continue the good works.
“Gov. Mbah has done well in all ramifications; this is partly why the APC candidates won overwhelmingly.
“I urge the people to vote for him, come the 2027 General Elections, so that he will continue with his good works and do more,” he said.
Reacting, the APC Chairman in Enugu State, Dr Martin Chukwunweike, said that the resounding victory at the polls indicated the dominance of the national ruling party, APC, in the state.
“We will not rest as we push the developmental efforts of President Bola Tinubu and our amiable governor, His Excellency Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for the world to see.
“Tinubu, Mbah and all the APC candidates will be reelected in 2027 as they have performed exceptionally well in the past three years,” he said.
In the numerical figures of the results pronounced, APC chairmanship candidates won with margins, while the opposition parties trailed behind with minimal votes.
For instance, in Udenu, Igbo-Eze North and Igbo-Eze South local Government Areas, respectively, the APC chairmen-elect secured virtually all the votes cast.
