NC-PTAs welcomes teachers’ suspension of strike

The National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NC-PTAs) Ghana has called on parents and guardians to ensure their children are ready to return to school on Monday, October 12, following the suspension of the strike by three teacher unions.

The Council welcomed the agreement reached between the government and the unions, expressing hope that the resumption of classes would restore normal academic activities in public schools.

In a statement dated October 10, the Council acknowledged the communiqué signed on October 9 by the government, represented by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and the Ghana Education Service (GES), alongside the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG).

It commended President John Dramani Mahama for his intervention and praised the government’s negotiating team and the leadership of the unions for reaching an agreement to end the industrial action.

“We are grateful that teachers have called off the strike to return to full classroom work on Monday, 12th October, 2026,” the statement, signed by the Council’s General Secretary, Gapson Kofi Raphael, said.

The NC-PTAs also expressed appreciation to the teachers for choosing dialogue to resolve the dispute, while recognising that the unions had raised concerns they considered important to their welfare.

The Council urged all parties to fulfil the commitments made during negotiations, particularly those concerning promotion arrears, allowances and the expired collective agreement.

Under the agreement, the outstanding promotion processes for 51,000 teachers are expected to be completed by October 16, with the remaining cases scheduled for resolution by the end of October.

The statement further indicated that discussions on the modalities for the Deprived Area Allowance are expected to be addressed in January 2027, while the Digital Support Allowance is scheduled for November and the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Allowance for December.

The Council said it would monitor the implementation of the commitments and encouraged the FWSC, GES and teacher unions to work together to meet the agreed deadlines.

It also called on school-based PTA executives to work with school management to recover instructional time lost during the strike.

According to the Council, the reopening of schools would relieve parents who had been balancing their children’s learning needs with other family responsibilities during the industrial action.

It noted that prolonged school closures also affect businesses and livelihoods associated with education, including school transport operators, uniform sellers, bookshops, food vendors and suppliers to the Ghana School Feeding Programme.

The NC-PTAs therefore appealed to parents and guardians with children in public basic and secondary schools to make the necessary preparations for Monday’s resumption.

“No Teacher, No School. No School, No Future,” the statement added.
