How Manchester United Could Line Up Against Atletico Madrid In Champions League Clash

According to a report by Evening Standard on Monday October 12, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick faces several important selection decisions ahead of his team’s UEFA Champions League encounter against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

The Red Devils will travel to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium in Spain, hoping to secure another victory in Europe’s biggest club competition after defeating Sabah FK 4-0 in their opening Champions League fixture.

However, injuries to several important players could force Carrick to make changes to his starting lineup, particularly in defence and midfield.

Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens is expected to retain his position between the posts. The shot-stopper has established himself as United’s preferred goalkeeper and could face a difficult evening against Atletico Madrid’s attacking players.

Defenders: Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez And Diogo Dalot

Carrick could select a defensive combination featuring Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Diogo Dalot.

With Luke Shaw struggling with an injury, Dalot could move to left-back, allowing Yoro to operate on the opposite side.

Maguire and Martinez could form the central defensive partnership, providing experience and physical strength against Atletico Madrid’s forwards.

Matthijs de Ligt has returned to the travelling squad, although his recent injury problems could make an immediate starting appearance unlikely.

Midfielders: Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans And Bruno Fernandes

Carlos Baleba could be handed his first start for Manchester United following his substitute appearance against Tottenham Hotspur.

The midfielder’s defensive awareness, physical strength and ability to recover possession could prove valuable against Diego Simeone’s side.

Youri Tielemans could partner Baleba in central midfield, helping United maintain possession and distribute passes.

Meanwhile, captain Bruno Fernandes is expected to operate in his familiar attacking midfield position, where his creativity and passing ability could help unlock Atletico Madrid’s defence.

Kobbie Mainoo remains a fitness concern after missing Monday’s training session, increasing Baleba’s chances of starting.

Forwards: Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha And Amad Diallo

Carrick could deploy Bryan Mbeumo as the central striker, with Matheus Cunha operating from the left wing and Amad Diallo providing attacking support from the right.

Mbeumo scored Manchester United’s goal during their 1-1 Premier League draw against Tottenham and could retain his position in attack.

Cunha’s movement and ability to carry the ball into dangerous areas could create opportunities, while Amad’s pace and dribbling could trouble Atletico Madrid’s defenders.

Benjamin Sesko remains unavailable because of injury, leaving Carrick with fewer options in the centre-forward position.

Manchester United Possible Starting XI (4-2-3-1)

Defenders: Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Diogo Dalot.

Midfielders: Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans.

Attacking Midfielders: Amad Diallo, Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha.

This formation could provide Manchester United with defensive stability while allowing their attacking players to exploit spaces behind Atletico Madrid’s defensive line.

Nevertheless, Carrick’s final selection will depend on the fitness of his players and his tactical approach to the encounter.

The match is scheduled for Tuesday October 13, 2026, with kickoff at 8:00 PM UK time, equivalent to 8:00 PM Nigerian time.

United will be hoping to maintain their winning start in the Champions League and secure an important result away from home against Diego Simeone’s men.
