Renowned Ugandan Catholic Priest and Composer Fr. James Kabuye Dies at 92

KAMPALA – The Catholic Church in Uganda has announced the death of Rev. Fr. Dr. James Kabuye, a celebrated priest and pioneering liturgical composer, who passed away at the age of 92.

Fr. Kabuye, of the Diocese of Kiyinda-Mityana, was widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the development of contemporary Catholic liturgical music in Uganda. His compositions, many written in Luganda, have become staples in churches across the country and beyond, blending African musical traditions with Catholic worship styles.

Born around 1934, Fr. Kabuye was ordained a priest in 1962. Shortly afterwards he was sent to Switzerland to study music. His training proved pivotal. In 1964, as the Catholic Church prepared for the canonisation of the Uganda Martyrs in Rome on 18 October, Church leaders sought a musically trained priest to collaborate with composer Joseph Kyagambiddwa on the oratorio created for the occasion. The then newly ordained Fr. Kabuye took on the role while still studying abroad. He later recalled being part of the historic African choir that performed Ganda music with traditional instruments in St Peter’s Basilica—the first time such sounds were heard there during a major papal liturgy.

Upon returning to Uganda in 1967, Fr. Kabuye was posted to Rubaga Cathedral in Kampala. There he began adapting Latin hymns into African musical forms and composing original pieces suited to local languages and sensibilities, in line with the reforms of the Second Vatican Council that encouraged the use of vernacular languages and cultural expressions in the liturgy.

Over more than five decades he remained central to the growth of Ugandan Catholic sacred music. He served on inter-diocesan music committees, taught choirs, organised festivals, and helped compile hymn collections used widely in the country. Estimates of his output run into hundreds of compositions, including entrance hymns, Mass settings, songs of praise, and pieces honouring the Uganda Martyrs.

Among his best-known works is Abajulizi Ab’Ettendo (MTO 421), a celebratory hymn that has become an annual anthem at Uganda Martyrs Day commemorations. Other popular pieces include Ayi Mukama Ebigambo Byange, Ayi Mukama Otenderezebwe, Tusimbe Ffena Mukisinde—one of his earliest and most widely sung community hymns—and a tribute to Saint Mbaaga Tuzinde titled Yogayoga Mbaaga Tuzinde. His Christmas compositions and other seasonal works also remain favourites in many parishes.

Fr. Kabuye’s approach fused Western harmonic structures with Kiganda musical elements, creating accessible, responsive hymns that encouraged full congregational participation. He later furthered his studies in the United States and continued composing and mentoring into his later years. In 2022 the Church and faithful marked his 60th anniversary of ordination with celebrations in Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese.

His death marks the end of an era for Ugandan Catholic liturgical music. Generations of worshippers have sung his melodies at Mass, funerals, weddings, and national religious gatherings. Church leaders and choirs across the country are expected to pay tribute in the coming days as arrangements for his funeral are finalised.

Fr. Kabuye is remembered not only as a gifted composer but as a humble priest whose music helped root the Catholic faith more deeply in Ugandan culture. His hymns will continue to be sung long after his passing.
